Matthew's first pet

Jun 04, 2007 07:55

After school one day (25 May 07), we took Matt out to Centrepoint and as we walked in from the carpark, we stopped by the pet store. We had a look at the hamsters and took one out for Matt to hold. He didn't quite know how to handle it initially and he kept trying to hold the hamster by the neck. The poor little hamster even squealed at one point ( Read more... )

haha! Congratulations on the new addition! he looks so happy holding hammie!

The winter white is OK, quite tame. And if your house conditions are cooling (e.g. in colder wetter seasons or something), they do turn white! But of course, they turn back when weather is warm.

If you do want an opposite gender, must introduce when they are before 6 mths of age. Also, only 2 boys can get along. 2 girls need 2 of everything, otherwise they fight over possessions. And opposite gender of course you can introduce, BUT, you will have new generation every 1 mth or so, because the male one will want to "do" it right after the female one has birthed... and before you know it, you will have tons of cages all over the house as the kids will want to keep the babies.

Ok then, no additional hamster! Cos we have a girl. :p I'm not keen on them fighting and I don't want to get hamster babies either. I heard they eat their young. Is that true?

Only if they feel threatened! Otherwise no young eating.

Yah, one is enough. If it was a guineapig then different story. Guineapigs v social

Oh yah, thanks for the info about them turning white! Didn't know that at all. Very interesting! There was a fatter and bigger one called something Pudding which I was interested in. But hub say looks common! Haha.

Wow Matthew looks really comfortable with his new pet!

You know what, our hamster went missing since Chinese New Year. We had a party at home one night and the next day, we realised the hamster is gone. I wasn't sure if the kids were playing with it and forgot to put back. Anyway, had left food around for a few nights in the hope luring her back but all was in vain. Sigh!

Quite common for that to happen! We (my sister and me) had hamsters when young. One day we left it in the balcony with the balcony door closed and when we came back, the hamster was gone. We suspect it fell down the floor trap!

We used to have 2 hamsters too but they didn't make it. I also doesn't like the feeling of their legs on my palm... so I never handle the hamsters.
My office used to have lots of hamsters too cos like what l1sh said they "created" many generation one after another. Many times the hamsters went missing too but luckily they managed to find them back. But now no more hamsters cos the maangement decided to ask them to bring them home cos someone is allergy to furry pets.

That's interesting. I've never heard of people keeping pets in the office! :) How long did your hamsters last? The pet shop told me the lifespan is about 1 to 1.5 years.

Imagine if you buy a pet in future, there'll be at least 3 very excited girls (K, S and L) playing with it - the pet will never be bored! :)

so cute!! better think twice about a companion for a hammie...i had experience with two hammies that did not get along, they can fight till bleeding, very scary...and for some friends whose hammies got along, came alot of little hammies in lightning speed!!! so...best to stick with one for the time being :) enjoy!!

Yup, I also just want to stick to one. This hamster's already creating a small mess on her own in the cage. She carries her bedding into the ball running area and the plastic tube area. Imagine her mess X 2.
