Fruit of death

Apr 29, 2009 18:00

I was sitting watching CSI last night, so it was sometime after 9pm, I was almost ready for bed except I hadn't changed into my pyjamas yet, and I was thinking about what to have for supper. Richard reminded me that there was some honeydew melon in the fridge if I wanted that. "Oooh, that'll do," I thought. I love melon, I don't eat it an awful ( Read more... )

That is pretty scary actually. I didn't know you could suddenly get allergic like that. I mean, I know you can develop allergies, but didn't knew it could happen that fast.

Oh, and I need to thank you! I've met a girl that is reasently diagnozed with chronic fatigue syndrom, and she was so happy to come across someone who actually had hear of it and didn't have the attitude "Hey - just pull yourself together!"
That is much thanks to your openess about it! :-) See, thanks to your information about it, she was met with a better attitude than she was used to! That's a butterfly wing just there (and yeah... that was a referense to this post, that I promised you about a year ago)

I've been doing a little reading up on it, and it seems it happens to people more than I'd realised, this adult onset food allergy. And just because I didn't go into anaphylaxis this time, doesn't mean it wouldn't happen another time if I ate melon again, which is a little scary, but at least it's a foodstuff that isn't often hidden in things, so should be easy enough to avoid.

I'm really pleased I was able to help (in a roundabout way) with your friend! It really does mean a lot just to have someone understand!

ZOMG...
I've read that even if you're not allergic to something (or a combination of somethings) growing up that can change later in life. Environmental pollutants combining with hormonal changes or some madness (and of course it's complicated further if you're prone to auto-immune stuff).

Also now at least you know what might cause a reaction ... can the doc give you a list of things with the same chemical compounds so you at least have an idea of the cross-reactions to look out for in future??

I had that happen one time when I made the mistake of bacon-wrapped oyster plus red wine at Easter. Sulfites, nitrites ... who knew!

Thank All Good Things for Richard and good doctors. Agh! I had the strangest feeling something was happening ...

Melons belong to the group of cross-reagents. It literally means that most of the time you will not risk developing an allergy against it even though it might be latent in your system. But when certain pollens come out, such as birch all hell can easily break loose.
To me it sounds like that is what happened to you.

I am glad that your tongue or throat didn't swell. It is pure terror when it happens.

You can get information about cross reactions on most allergy sites and pollen calenders.

I have so far been lucky to never have a cross reaction.

You certainly are the person to come to with all of this! =)

I've just been reading about cross-reactions, it could indeed have had something to do with it (also with the fact that I usually have melon around Christmas, when the other allergen or whatever won't be around.... ?)

Exactly.

Many people can have peas in the winter, but as soon as summer and pollen pokes out their ugly heads, that is it for them.

If you dare, you can try with melon again in the late autumn, but not without some anti-histamine in the house..... You might be able to have it when the other allergen is not present.

I know people that can eat strawberries for the first week or so and after that they break out in wild rashes.

Cross-reactions are the devil to determine, because it means provoking the body and that might cause the allergy to become active and permanent. So for most it is better to know about it and then think twice about what they eat during the pollen season.

I like melons, but they're not really going to be missed if I cut them out of my diet, so it's not going to be a problem avoiding them, I wouldn't think. I'd say I'd rather do that than risk another reaction, because also it's made me very tired today with my M.E, I think that's simply from my body struggling to right itself.

Thanks for all your advice, it's nice to hear it from someone who knows what they're talking about!

WHOA! That's a bad one! Last time that happened to me was when I was visiting a friend and her house had a LOT of dust in (which was really embarrassing as I felt like a total cleaning snob) but I could barely breathe within 5 minutes! It's bloody scary.

I bet you were knackered today, I usually am after a bad one. Actually, maybe my hayfever being really bad at the moment is what is currently wearing me out on a daily basis?

Anyway, I'm glad you're okay. *hugs and anti histamines*

PS - If you ever get caught out red wine works very quickly to stop allergic reactions - seriously!

I usually get really bad hayfever but these past 2 years I've been on this nasal spray which has been genius for me, I've hardly had any trouble at all, so smugly I'm thinking I'm sorted. Now I get this! Lol.

I've been totally knackered today, the not getting to bed until after 1:30am didn't help, but also I think it's the body going "WTF was that all about?"

Oooh, red wine? I did not know that.....
