Beginning to Weave

Two summers ago, at the first Fiber Festival in Crystal Lake, I took a work shop in weaving on one of those tiny little square looms.  It was fun and entertaining, but of course anything that small is really only useful for sampling (since I’m not about to make a bunch of small squares to sew together).

Soon after I happened to be at a yarn shop ( Read more... )

Wow, your selvedges are so straight for your first time weaving! I'm impressed. I agree with you on the fringes; I really like a braided fringe (or a twisted fringe) when the fringe is long, but a short fringe like that looks nicer loose.

"Weaving is fast!"

That's because the loom was pre-warped. Mwahahahahahahahaha!

Actually, I see your point about giving you a chance to concentrate on the weaving before learning warping. (Getting people hooked on the craft before they have to do the tedious part. *cough*) I think I've talked to at least one person who taught weaving who said she usually warped the loom for beginning students so they could get right into it.

thanks! There are definitely some loose spots in the selvedge, but I really concentrated on getting those even. I'm going to look at some of the other finishing options -- I saw one that starts with a fringe that reminded me of the way one weaves the top of a basket. That could be quite pretty if the fringe starts out long enough.

I suspect the warping will slow me down tremendously, yes :) Still, the actual process was so fast, and my crocheting is so slow, this probably will use yarn faster overall.

Check Craig's List, you might be able to find an inexpensive table loom.

Really nice work! I have been so tempted by various looms, the only thing stopping me is space, I think. I really want a tapestry loom.

Thank you! This is a table loom, didn't take up much space. I think it's the Flip that folds up, and has a warping board on its underside. I don't know about tapestry looms though, size wise.
