Vouchers and Small Organic Schools

I was thinking about the idea of vouchers as a way of improving public education (and as most of my LJ friends know, vouchers are an idea that I have long supported) and was thinking about some of the effects that a voucher system would have ( Read more... )

Indeed, I have never thought about it in that way before. And it strikes me as a move back towards the ancient system of tutoring, where one learned person passes on their knowledge to just a small group of students :)

There's a Mennonite school that my partner's daughter attends.
Here in KY- you can homeschool with only written notification to the school board in question. Several families can homeschool together or just those children. To get into a public school or college- one must pass tests to see what grade is achieved or GED test for college, all in all not a bad system.
I could see the idea as a good one (especially since Bridget is CONSTANTLY in detention for being an ADHD child- cant sit still and DO her work- But that doesn't work because it's a social difference.)

To be devil's advocate though, there might be a problem with the religious end of it. Replace "pagan" with "fundamentalist Islam" and you can see where government funds to religious education would be a huge problem, as they've proven to be in the UK and elsewhere.Well, sure. Even for pagan schools lots of people will object on religious grounds. Lots of people these days object to Christian schools, some people object to such schools even existing. Under the above system I described there would be numerous objectionable ideologies which would be taught. The beauty is that there would be no distinction made between a controversial belief system and an acceptable one ( ... )

I like the idea of small schools supplied for by vouchers and some competitive market for schools with a little bit of state and federal oversight for standards.
