Wooh. Crashed a bit there. Had a really heavy headcold with the fever and the coughing and the raw throat and the semi-comatose, was in no mood to describe it in any detail.

I was inclined to blame it at first on the way I'd so drastically lowered my protein intake, but - now I can think a bit more clearly - it was probably only a factor at most. ( Read more... )

Being cold or wet and cold won't make you sick. Germs will. Poor nutrition will make you more susceptible to germs. Blame the lack of protein!

(I've caught 5 increasingly bad viruses in the past year and 4 months and the seriousness has increased with my relative poverty.)

I think that cold also makes you more susceptible, presumably by suppressing the immune system. (Wetness seriously exacerbating that of course.) I've caught cold too consistently after being cold to think it's coincidence.

The exact mechanism I'm not sure of, but I guess its to do with the body having to divert energy from the immune system to maintain core temperature. Possibly lowered temperatures in the nasal passages suit the virus as well.

But these weren't the only factors. I'd been running way short of sleep as I mentioned. And possibly the lack of alcohol, with its natural antiviral action... All in all, sitting outdoors in a cold breeze with wet hair and shorts on was probably just the last straw!
