People are really writing fic like that? .... I suppose I shouldn't be so naive as to ask that, this is the internet. But Steve believes in not being a bully, not in pacifism. That's totally a huge difference!

To be fair, the fic doesn't revolve around Steve being a pacifist, but it does describe him at one point as being one, or having been one, and then implies that it was the general evil of other humans that forced him into joining the army...or something?

Hrm. I suppose it would be possible to write, within the confines of movie canon, a story in which Steve gets involved in hard-left politics during the 30s and gets disillusioned and changes his ideas about pacifism. But a) that would be a very difficult story to get right without extensive historical research and b) the writer would need to remember that Steve Rogers really doesn't get pushed into stuff-he tends to jump feet first.

Ahaha, I would read that story! This...is definitely not that story. I think some people get so caught up in the whole "Steve Rogers is [probably] canonically a virgin and stands up for the little guy thus he is a woobie" thing that they forget to check whether or not they've veered wildly into OOC territory.

HE KILLED A LOT OF PEOPLE, WILLINGLY. I mean, he's not a warmonger, but he's definitely a soldier. Like, that is his goddamn MO.

People are weird.

RIGHT. Also, I don't think this person understands the meaning of the word "pacifist." Sigh.

Ahahahaha. Yeah, no. I'm pretty sure there are people who haven't seen Captain America writing stories. Or else people who can't parse actual plots and character development.

EXACTLY. Also, like I told e_l, I don't think this person really understands what "pacifist" means. Like, "pacifist" does not mean "peaceful, gentle soul." Steve Rogers may (MAY) actually have a peaceful gentle soul, but he's pretty clearly NOT opposed to conflict in any way, shape or form. Argh.

This is a good point! And also, far more forgiving than I was willing to be! :D

Also also, I still maintain that this person hasn't really considered what a "pacifist" technically is. (Hint: NOT Steve Rogers!)
