Series/Fandom: Harry Potter

Age: 28
Gender: Male
Species: Human (Wizard)

Canon Used: Background info from books 3-7, actual canon point is before book 3.

Appearance: I’m using Ben Barnes as Sirius’ PB, so he looks like this. His time in Azkaban, however, has changed him - this is his description from the book: “A mass of filthy, matted hair hung to his elbows. If eyes hadn't been shining out of the deep, dark sockets, he might have been a corpse. The waxy skin was stretched so tightly over the bones of his face, it looked like a skull. His yellow teeth were bared in a grin.” His animagus form is a giant, shaggy black dog - I tend to imagine him as a Newfoundland (there's an icon of that for Sirius' journal). This form is just as starved as his human one, though.

Psychology: As a teen, Sirius was rebellious. He went out of his way to separate himself from his family of dark, pureblooded wizards - he was sorted into Gryffindor rather than Slytherin, and decorated his room in Gryffindor colors (and pictures of Muggle girls in bikinis) to show his pride, and anger his parents. He was often a bully when it came to Slytherins (with the help of his best friend, James Potter), particularly one Severus Snape (dubbed “Snivellus”). He was loyal and kind when it came to his friends, however, and charismatic enough to be one of the most popular boys at Hogwarts. He was a troublemaker as well, but he was very clever and still managed to have perfect grades.

His loyalty to his closest friends (the Marauders, as they called themselves), showed when he discovered his friend Remus Lupin was a werewolf. He studied for three years to become an Animagus (someone who could change into an animal form) with James and Peter, so they could accompany Remus when he transformed. Sirius’ form is a large black dog, likely symbolizing his sense of loyalty.

After Hogwarts, he joined the fight against Voldemort - unlike his brother, who became a Death Eater - and eventually became a member of the secret Order of the Phoenix. When it became clear there was a spy in their midst, Sirius lost his trust in even his closest friends, except for James and Lily. He became their Secret Keeper, his loyalty showing again when he promised to protect the knowledge of their whereabouts. But he switched with Peter Pettigrew at the last moment, because he thought he would be less of a target for Voldemort.

He was wrong, and he still blames himself for this decision. Even though Peter was the one who betrayed them, Sirius is convinced that James and Lily’s deaths were his fault because he made the switch. Ironically, however, the knowledge that he was technically innocent was the only thing that kept him from going completely mad in Azkaban (the wizard prison). Sirius was sent there after Peter faked his own death and framed Sirius for it, as well as a massacre of 13 other wizards.

This may not have happened if Sirius hadn’t attempted to hunt Peter down, but Sirius is also incredibly impatient. That, combined with the need for vengeance erased any logical grasp he might have had on the situation. The loss of his godson, Harry Potter, didn’t help either -- Hagrid took him to the Dursleys’ despite Sirius’ wish to raise the boy himself.

The prison where Sirius is kept is guarded by creatures called Dementors. They can suck out a person’s soul from their body with a kiss, and steal their happy memories, leaving them only with terrible ones, and a feeling of despair. The thought of his innocence isn’t a happy one for Sirius, so he focuses on it to the point of obsession in order to keep himself sane (relatively, anyway). He also shifts into his Animagus form when the effect of the Dementors becomes too much for him to bear, because the state of his mind after the transformation confuses them.

Other Skills/Abilities: Sirius was a highly skilled wizard, but without the use of his wand (it was snapped when he was sent to Azkaban), or getting another one somehow, his magical abilities are pretty useless. The exception to this is his ability to transform into a dog, which doesn’t require a wand. Sirius still retains his own mind during this transformation, but his thoughts are less complex, and he can also communicate with other animals.

Other Weaknesses: Sirius has all the usual human weaknesses - he can get sick, be killed, etc. His magical powers, if he had his wand, would be greatly drained from prolonged exposure to the Dementors, and his physical strength fares much the same. In his dog form, he is nearly skinny enough to slip through the bars of his cell. However, in book 3 we know that he still managed to swim to shore and journey on foot after 12 years of this condition, so perhaps with great determination he can muster up strength if necessary.

History: Sirius Black III was born in 1959, to Orion and Walburga Black. His family also included a younger brother, Regulus Arcturus Black. Together they lived in London, at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, which was concealed from their Muggle neighbors. Sirius didn’t have a happy childhood - his family was full of dark, pure-blood wizards, who believed wizards and Muggles should never mix. Sirius, however, disagreed with their beliefs, and went out of his way to defy them.

When he was eleven, he was accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he spent the next seven years of his life. Instead of being sorted into Slytherin, like the rest of his family, he was sorted into Gryffindor, where he became best friends with James Potter. Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew also joined the group, and they became the Marauders.

In his second year, Sirius discovered that Remus was, in fact, a werewolf. Along with James and Peter, he studied for three years to become an Animagus, so he could accompany his friend on the night of the full moon, and keep the werewolf in check. He achieved this in his 5th year. Sometime after that, the Marauders also created the Marauder’s Map, based on their explorations of Hogsmeade (the wizard village), and the grounds around Hogwarts. This map included secret passages out of the castle, and the helpful feature of identifying people in the area. It could only be revealed by the phrase “I solemnly swear I am up to no good.” Sirius and his friends created their nicknames when they made this map - his own nickname was Padfoot, based on his dog form.

At the age of sixteen, he made the mistake of pulling a terrible prank on one Severus Snape, who he’d bullied ever since they met. Snape had been, according to Sirius, sneaking around and trying to find out what they were up to, hoping to get them expelled. So Sirius lured him to the place where Remus transformed every month, and Remus nearly killed him. Snape was only saved because James pulled him back at the last minute, and he never forgave either of them.

The same year, Sirius also ran away from home, and his mother blasted him off the family tapestry. He went to stay with James during the holidays, until he was 17. Then he got his own place, funded by his uncle, Alphard. Sirius hadn’t been able to stand his family’s pure-blooded ideals, or that being a Black “practically made you royal” because their bloodline was so pure.

After Hogwarts, he joined the war against the dark wizard Voldemort, who essentially had the same ideals as his family. Along with the Marauders, he joined the secret organization the Order of the Phoenix. At some point, it became clear their was a spy in their midst, but nobody could pinpoint exactly who the traitor was, so everyone was suspect.

James and his wife, Lily, needed a Secret Keeper to protect the location of their family, and Sirius took the job, because he was still James’ best friend. But he switched at the last moment, thinking he would be a prime target for Voldemort, and that he wouldn’t pay attention to a wizard like Peter Pettigrew.

Little did he know that Peter was actually the traitor. He gave away the Potters’ location a week after the charm was performed (on Halloween, 1981), and Voldemort destroyed their home - James and Lily were killed, but their son (and Sirius’ godson), survived, defeating Voldemort in the process.

Sirius tried to rescue Harry from the rubble, but Hagrid had beat him to it. He told Sirius that he was taking Harry to the Dursley’s (Lily’s Muggle family), on Dumbledore’s orders. Sirius gave Hagrid his motorbike so he could take Harry there, and then went to hunt down Peter Pettigrew.

Peter, however, was cleverer than Sirius gave him credit for, and framed Sirius for the murder of thirteen other wizards in a street full of witnesses, instead. He faked his own death, and hid out as a rat so he wouldn’t be found. Sirius was dragged off to Azkaban, where he’s been suffering the past six years for a crime he didn’t commit.

Canon Point: Sirius is only six years into his stay in Azkaban, so his canon point is before the events of the first book.

Reality Description: The Wizarding World is concealed magically from the Muggle (non-magical) one. There are pureblooded wizards, like Sirius’ family, and muggle-borns - wizards who had at least one muggle parent. On the opposite side of the coin, there are also wizards who have children with no magical powers at all; these are called Squibs. The pureblooded wizards are generally the elites in wizarding society, though there are exceptions.

Children will generally exhibit signs of magic at least before the age of seven, and it is generally accidental - usually when they are angry, or scared. This magic is wandless, and uncontrollable. If they do show magical abilities, they are generally sent to a wizarding school, like Hogwarts, after receiving a letter delivered by owl on their eleventh birthday. They learn to focus their magic with a wand, and spend the next seven years studying spells, charms, potions, etc. There are laws against underage magic, but they don’t apply when the children are at school, or if they’re too young to attend.

The laws of wizarding Britain are controlled by The Ministry of Magic (which is also in contact with the muggle government, mostly so they can work together when covering things up). Other countries have their own systems, presumably. Voldemort was a powerful dark wizard who attempted to take control for himself, and a war was waged against him and his allies. He was seemingly defeated in 1981 by an infant -- Harry Potter.

Places of importance include Number 12 Grimmauld Place, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Hogsmeade (the only Wizarding village in England), and Azkaban, the wizarding prison. Azkaban is located in the North Sea, and is also concealed from muggles. It can’t be plotted on a map, either.

The guards of Azkaban are creatures called Dementors, who feed on happy memories. This leaves the victim in a state of deep depression and general madness, as they’re left only with their darkest memories. They can also perform the Dementor’s Kiss, which essentially drains a person of their soul, and turns them into a vegetable. There is a charm that can be used to deter them, but wizards have their wands snapped before they’re sent to Azkaban.

The Wizarding World has many creatures, though, and not all of them are as terrible as Dementors. There are unicorns, dragons, hippogriffs, werewolves, vampires, house elves, goblins, veela, and more. There are also normal animals, like rats, cats, toads, and owls that are used as magical familiars - they are sentient creatures, and bonded intimately with the wizard who takes care of them. Owls are also used in the Wizarding World as a postal system; they carry letters, and can easily locate their recipients.
