I need help from all my smart friends out there. I need to get more space for my computer. I've almost used up all 10MB on my hard drive. Question is, I do have a spare 5MB hard drive from another computer. Does it have to be compatible with my current computer? Right now I'm using a Gateway P3. I have no idea what the other computer is, it's ( Read more... )

5 and 10 MB??? I can only assume you mean GB.

Yes, you can install the drive from a P-2 into a P-3. Even if it is of a different style, the ata controller should downgrade for the drive if it is on it's own controller.

Here's what you shoudl do. Open the case, and install the hdd into the bay, next to the other hdd. Find the cable that goes to the CD-Rom or DVD rom. You will need to look to see if the dvd is a master or slave (On the back of the drive there are jumpers. The jumper will determine what it is, it will be labled) Well, OK, don't instll the drive till you know that. If the Rom drive is a master, set the 5 GB hdd to slave, or visa versa if the rom drive is a slave. Now, plug in the middle part of the cable into the hdd drive. now, plug in the power cord (you should have a few extra)

That should work just fine, even if the motherboard does ata-66 and the spare drive is onle an ata-33.

If you have any problems, let me know.

LOL!!! See what I mean?! Yes, I meant GB.
And you completely lost me. BUT, I think I know someone that can install it for me, so just knowing I can use the 5GB hard drive is helpful. Thank you!!
I'm beginning to wonder if 5GB is enough... How many hard drives can one install into a PC?

depends on how many hdd controllers there are in the system. Most have only 2 which can support two drives, but some have 3. You can also purchase hdd controller cards which can add an additional 2 slots.

If you have a single dvd/cd-rom, then you can have 3 hdd without any needed hardware. Hard drives are really cheap these days. i have seen 72 GB ones for 200.

I would recommend http://www.computergate.com, they have good prices and stand by what they say... They messed up my order once sending me the wrong stuff... Sent me the correct stuff for free after that... About $200 worth.

Also I have about 10 10gb hard drives laying around if you want one.
