Haha, my story with Montreal and tipping - we went to this bar and I was going to tip anyway, because I'm an American, but everyone in Montreal is a bit pissy with Americans, so we had really shitty service and I was still going to tip, because that's what I do, then the waitress brought us our bill after basically ignoring us most of the night and said, "Tip is NOT included in this bill, you know," in a really shitty voice. I did not leave a very good tip. So, apparently they do expect tips! But maybe only if you're an American
( ... )
Haha, I have a work colleague from Quebec, and she said that I was probably likely to get away with 1) not speaking French and 2) not understanding tips, simply by virtue of having a British accent, which she says will be interpreted as "super cute" :D
I'm sorry I didn't reply to this sooner - thank you for your awesome advice! I'd heard about that pizza place before, and I definitely think that it'll be a well-earned treat after trekking across the bridge ;) The Biodome in Monreal certainly does look cool, so that's probably something we'll check out, and I'm always intrigued by Science Museums (you know I work for the Science Museum in London, right?).
YES OK. If you're free, of course. I'm sorry I didn't get to this sooner, I'm not really sure where all my life has gone the past few weeks. I IM'd you last night, but then promptly fell off the internet (again), I'll be in New York from Lunchtime on Monday 27th until early morning on Wednesday 29th, and then again from the evening of Thursday June 6 until the evening of Saturday June 8th. Let me know if you're free any of that and we can BARCADE + WAYSTATION etc. If you want to contact me and have half a chance of my actually remembering to reply, you're welcome to add me on Facebook (you know my real name, I think?)
For art, you could go to MoMA or the Guggenheim. Though a full day at the Met (I think it's called? It's in the borders of Central Park) would be your best bet, it doesn't just have art. I went to a couple comic book places my first trip there but I don't remember where they are. Tea will have good advice on beer and food places. She found me a beer I actually liked (I don't drink it) and I liked the restaurants she took us to.
....... you mean the Metropolitan Museum of Art? That I am DEFINITELY going to - they have an awesome looking Punk exhibition on at the moment, that I really want to see. It seems rather like the V&A in tone and content, and I love the V&A, so if I'm going to pay to see something, it's probably going to be that one. I think that Jonny has an idea of which comic shops he wants to visit, so I'm probably just going to follow him on that one. Also I'm really sorry, I meant to reply to this weeks ago, but I fell off the internet. Thank you for your reply!! :)
Yes. I think it sometimes gets shortened to the Met though? I may have been typing on my phone so I didn't really want to go looking it up to check the full name. You'll probably want to make sure you have a full day there. It is so big, and I think even with our full day, we didn't see everything.
If you're going to Montreal for eight nights, *definitely* get a week-long metro pass. The metro will get you to a lot of the places you need to go, and if you can get it for the week, it's a lot cheaper than taxi and faster than driving.
When it comes to tips, it works the same in Canada has it does in America! Generally 15-18% is a good tip, imo, although it does vary depending on how nice the place is XD
Also, if you like food, I'd definitely suggest trying out Cora's at some point. It's a brunch restaurant that's spread through Canada, and it's known for having absolutely huge servings of fresh fruit with its dishes.
Thank you for this - sorry it's taken me FOREVER to reply. I'll definitely get a metro pass - I'm pretty good at public transport, coming from London, and I always flinch when I see tourists taking taxis for, like, 3 tube stops!
Thank you for the tipping advice, too -- we have such a tight-ass tipping culture over here, that I'm never sure what to do when I'm elsewhere!
