I suspect that smoked mackerel is probably just too fishy for him, TBH. I might make it for me though, now he's back at school. :)

The word you're looking for is "broiler". A salamander is a pro kitchen gadget.

Nonono, a salamander is a fire elemental, and thus far more humorous than a broiler, which is a chicken.
(In that yeah, I kind of knew, but OTOH most American cookers I've seen don't have any kind of grill on, in UK English terms.)
