When I was 14, I joined the Mormon Church. Some of you may already know this. I was an adolescent convert, introduced to that religion by a junior high school friend. No one else in my family had ever been a Mormon before, and no one else in my family converted along with me.
(
old church friends, old friends in general, life experiences in the meantime, and finding each other again after twenty-odd years... is it worth it? Survey says: prolly not! )

The only connections I have made with old friends (like high school class reunions) and army buddies and prior work buddies hasn't been much more than exchanging a few facts about our life, our kids, etc. There hasn't been any interest in renewing close friendships. It's kind of the past is the past and most people seem to be more into living for today.

I further hope that you find a way to connect to the people you've known and loved in the past. Could you be reading into their responses a disapproval that isn't really there? Or maybe you have to make the best of it while accepting that they don't understand that part of you.
And finally, I'm so sorry about your tragic loss. I had no idea. I can't even imagine the pain you must have experienced.
But really really finally, I hope you have email notification so that you see this comment on your months old post.
