Photo Editing Software?

I'd really like to start a photo journal but I'm having a hard time getting to some good free photo editing software for Mac. I've been trying to download GIMP all day but the website seems to be down and its really frustrating. I think I like the idea of forcing myself to make at least one photo entry a week. I never really checked out Picasa. I thought it was just where you could upload stuff, I want something with photo editing capabilities. Does it have that?

Man, my campus newspaper has a recurring piece this term, following someone doing P90X. I guess this is the new hotness?

It must be, because it was literally forced down my throat by three completely unrelated friends. With that much support I figure, why not?
