Alaska's position is completely reasonable.

As one defender has pointed out, Alaska's position is mostly due to Palin, and the national media circus surrounding her. Arguably, the state is in better financial position than a lot of states, with lower unemployment than the national average, though there's a lot of unpredictability with the economy so dependent on commodity prices.

I would stress that it's been limited to "current trouble spots" -- Louisiana is just perennially fucked up, but since that's our state's constant state, it being anything but in trouble would be abnormal.
