Australia fun things

Oct 25, 2009 20:44

My parents are going to Australia on Boxing day this year and I want to maybe treat them to something while they're out there. I think the places they're most likely to have time at the moment is in Sydney and Melbourne, possibly Byron Bay.

Can anyone who's been there or lives there suggest anything they should do that I could get for them? Thanks

Would they be up for climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge? Bridgeclimb have an excellent safety record, and the prices aren't too appalling.

Bridge Climb is awesome. I did the night-time one and it was beautiful (http://pics.livejournal.com/wackywanderer/pic/0002xycb). Sunset is meant to be prettiest, but is more expensive. It is quite hard work though.

I believe they're already doing it, but I will reccommend sunset to them. :)

What's your budget like? Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is definitely a good one, if they're not afraid of heights. Another thing you could do is check out http://www.redballoondays.com.au/ for some ideas. I bought my Mum an experience voucher for Mother's Day.

Another suggestion could be finding out where they're going to be on New Year's Eve, and perhaps finding them a great place to go? NYE in Sydney is pretty spectacular with fireworks over the harbour.

Not loads, but reasonable. It'll depend tbh.

I think they're already doing the bridge climb (though my mum's a big wuss, so I guess I'll have to wait and see!)

I think they're booked in NYs eve too. Lol!

Have you heard good things about the harbour cruise boat things? I'm thinking about one of the medium priced one of those at the moment.

If you're talking dinner cruise on the harbour or something, then I've never heard anything bad :). Captain Cook Cruises and Matilda are two of the better known companies, if you want to go that route. Some of the smaller companies tend to have crappier boats.

Another place I've been that was wonderful is Shark Island, which is on the Harbour. We won a thing and went there on Mother's Day one year, with a picnic, and it was gorgeous. Unfortunately named, but I promise there are no land sharks there *g* Website: http://www.sydney.com.au/shark-island.htm

Fort Denison is pretty cool, too, but that's more like a history tour than a pretty place to have a picnic. They show you around and let you climb the tower thingy and it's sort of like a museum on an island.
