During my walk to school at 9:30am, I decided that this is the hopeful season of cold and hopeful morning toes. Everyone wears sandals in anticipation of the fore-casted high temperature (68 degrees!), but classes before noon mean that the southernmost digits are forced to confront temperatures closer to the day's low (48 degrees). Brrr. I have ( Read more... )

Ha. I usually dread that question because it is always followed by a long answer, during which time the eyes of the inquisitor tend to glaze over. In short: 19th century Cuba and the competing ideas of nationalism, especially the way that race was incorporated into (or excluded from) the discussion. Since Cuba was a Spanish colony until 1898, and had only burst onto the worldwide economic scene by means of institutional, racialized slavery, it's a pretty interesting topic. Now I just need to read until my eyes fall out trying to come up with an original argument upon which I can base at least fifty pages of research paper. *yeeps*

I don't know if you care or not, but I mentioned this to my mom last night. One of her friends from high school is named Peter Sleeth. He writes for the Oregonian. He is obsessed with Cuba and has visited many a time and supposedly knows a lot about it? I don't know how true that is, but if you're looking for some breathing sources for your paper i could give you his e-mail address. I don't how relevant it could be to your topic since he's not an expert or anything, but I just thought I'd offer the information nonetheless.

I'm sure he thinks he's an expert though...

I admire those that can write so much...
My head explodes at the thought of writing past 3 pages.
If anyone could do it, you would be the person I put my money on!

Awe... thanks. :)

At this point I am beginning to question the wisdom in taking on such a huge work load during my last term, though... It doesn't really leave me much room to kick back and enjoy my last few months in Eugene.

I guess the silver lining is that if I don't get accepted in time (or at all!) for the position leaving in July, I will be all different flavors of grateful for the extra time in Oregon before disembarking for two years.
