After the Heartbreak
Miroku watched as his beloved ex-fiancée Sango accepted Lord Kuranosuke’s marriage proposal. Even though he wanted the woman that he loved so dearly to be happy, especially after Naraku had killed her brother, the young man couldn’t help but feel angry that she had chosen to run out on him the day before their wedding only to cheat on him with another man. What was worse was that Sango had thrown it in Miroku‘s face by asking her fiancé to come with them on their journey to collect the rest of the shards of the Shikon Jewel. The idea of the lord coming with them broke the poor monk’s heart to pieces.
During their journey together, Sango and Kuranosuke were married by Kaede in her village. Since the wedding of his beloved Sango, Miroku kept to himself for most of their journey. Not only wouldn’t he talk to his friends, but he had also stopped his practice of conning rich village people out of their money since he had already stopped his lecherous ways a long time ago. Since his dreams for a family with the woman that he loved were dashed, he didn’t want toe continue living. He wanted to end his suffering and soon.
Meanwhile Inuyasha, who was the monk’s closest friend, was worried about how different Miroku was acting. So one night while the two were bathing in the hot springs, the young hanyou decided to confront the young monk.
“Miroku, I am very worried about you.” he said worriedly.
“I am perfectly fine Inuyasha; you don’t have to worry about me.” Miroku said with a fake smile upon his face.
“You aren’t fine Miroku. Ever since Sango left you for Kuranosuke, you haven’t been yourself.”
“How am I supposed to act Inuyasha? I’ve lost the woman that I love to another man. Before when I had my wind tunnel in my hand I feared never having the future I wanted for myself and now that we have defeated Naraku and I am no longer cursed, that future is gone. It disappeared when Sango decided to married someone else. My life is empty without her. Life has no meaning for me anymore.”
“Please don’t say that Miroku. You will find love again.”
“Inuyasha I don’t want to find love again. Sango was everything to me and I am nothing without her. I’ve lost my one chance at happiness and I have to deal with that.”
Without saying anything more, Miroku stepped out of the hot water and went to get dressed. Once he was clothed, he went deep into the forest with the sole purpose of finally ending his life.
Meanwhile Inuyasha, who had gotten out of the hot springs about twenty minutes after Miroku, had gone looking for his friend in the forest. When he couldn’t find him, he went back to the campsite in hopes that the young monk was sitting by the fire with the others. When he didn’t see him there, the half demon decided to go back to the forest to search for Miroku again. He was just about leave camp when Kagome stopped him by using the sit command. Looking at him in anger she said “Where do you think you are going Inuyasha?”
“I am going to find Miroku, he hasn’t come back to camp back yet and he left the hot springs before I did.”
“He probably went off to think, you know how hard Sango’s marriage to Kuranosuke has been on him. He probably just went somewhere to sort out his feelings on his own. You’ll see; Miroku’s heart will heal in time.”
“I hope you’re right wench,” Inuyasha growled and then sat down next to her near the camp fire.
While Inuyasha was still debating whether or not to go find Miroku, the young monk had found a means to ending all of his pain. Seeing the lake in the middle of the forest as an answer to his prayers, Miroku proceeded to drown himself in its murky waters.
Several minutes after the incident, Sesshomaru’s adopted daughter, Rin wondered into the forest with the very same lake where the young monk had taken his life. She had been picking flowers for the demon lord when she came upon Miroku’s body lying face down in the water. Seeing it, the little girl began to scream in terror.
At the same time that Rin was picking flowers, Sesshomaru had been at Inuyasha’s campsite visiting with his half-brother. After Naraku’s death the brothers had become very close. So after not seeing Inuyasha for awhile, Sesshomaru had decided to pay his brother a visit. While the two brothers talked, Rin cries of terror rang through out the forest. Thinking that his beloved daughter was in trouble, Sesshomaru ran towards Rin’s voice. The young lord ran so fast that he didn’t even notice the young hanyou had been following right behind him.
As they drew near to Rin’s screams, both men saw the young man floating in the middle of the water. Diving into the lake Inuyasha fished the body of his friend out of the water. Once he brought the body to shore, he knew that the young monk was dead. Sadden by the fact that his friend had taken his own life, Inuyasha looked up at his older brother in devastation. Hating to see that look on his brother’s face, Sesshomaru knew that he had to bring the young monk back to life with his Tenseiga for his brother‘s sake. Taking his sword out of its sheath, he used its healing powers on Miroku.
Five minutes after the Lord of the West used his sword on Miroku, the young man began to draw breath again. Inuyasha was about to thank Sesshomaru when Miroku began to moan. When the young monk woke up fully he asked "How come I am still alive, I should be dead."
"I, Lord Sesshomaru brought you back to life with my sword; you should be thankful pathetic human."
"Why did you do that? I wanted to die you bastard; I can't live my life without Sango." Miroku said angrily.
Pulling away from Sesshomaru and Inuyasha, the young monk took out the knife that he’d stolen from Kagome’s bag. He was about to slit his neck open when Inuyasha knocked it out of his hands. With his eyes, the half-demon pleaded his brother to help him out with his friend. Once they silently agreed that Sesshomaru would take over the young monk's care, the demon lord said "Then I shall find you something to live for monk. This Sesshomaru will bring you to my castle; there you will be a teacher and caregiver for my daughter Rin. As you will be under my domain, you'll not attempt to end your life again. Your life is now mine, I shall do with it as I see fit. Maybe during your time at the castle you will find something else to live for besides some bitch of a woman."
"Thank you brother for helping me with Miroku but if he kills himself while he is staying with you, I will kill you."
"He will be fine brother I promise you."
Miroku, angry that the two brothers were talking about him like he wasn't there, tried to struggle as the Lord of the West picked him up. Once the demon lord had the young man trapped in his arms, he floated off towards his castle with Rin following him on A-Un.
When they got to the castle, Sesshomaru put the struggling monk down. Since Miroku didn't wish to be there or continue on with his existence, the young man ran from the demon lord and jumped off the nearest cliff. Growling Sesshomaru floated off the cliff and saved the monk from certain death again.
"Why did you try to kill yourself again monk? Did I say that your life is mine and that I shall do what I see fit with it? You will not try this again."
"You should have just let me die."
"Why do you desire death so much human?" Sesshomaru asked curiously.
"I don’t want to live because without Sango my life is nothing."
"Is your life is so meaningless to you that you would kill yourself over a woman who didn’t love you? You have to learn that your life is of more value than the love of a woman. While you figure out your worth here at the castle, you will be looking after Rin. If something happens to her while under your care, your wish of death will come true.”
Knowing that he could never hurt a little girl, Miroku grudgingly agreed to Sesshomaru’s terms knowing that the Lord wouldn‘t let him kill himself again. When the demon lord knew that he had the upper hand, he called his servant, Jaken to show the young man to his room.
While showing Miroku to his quarters, the little imp scowled at him and said “I don’t why my master is helping you out for the sake of his brother, he should have let you die.” Ignoring what the little toad said, Miroku continued to follow him around.
Once Jaken showed him to his room and left, the young monk sighed. He didn’t want to be there but he knew that Sesshomaru would be watching his every step so he had to make the best out of his situation. Crawling onto the bed, the young man fell swiftly to sleep. But even in his dreams he couldn’t escape the pain he felt from Sango’s betrayal.
In his sleep he had dreamt that Sango and Kuranosuke were laughing at him while they purposely made love in front of him. Even when morning came, he couldn’t wipe the images from his mind. He knew that if he was going to take Sesshomaru’s advice and try to move on, that he had to forget about Sango all together. He had to remember that she never really did love him in the first place if she had cheated on him and that his life was worth more than a bitch that couldn’t make up her mind.
With that in mind, Miroku took a deep breath and went to the library, which Jaken had showed him to the day before, and began his lesson plans for the day. He had been preparing for about two hours when the imp finally brought the little girl in for class.
Seeing who her new teacher was, Rin’s eyes lit up with joy. Smiling at him, she ran towards him and gave him a hug. Smiling a genuine smile for the first time in a year, Miroku reached out and put the little girl on his lap and began to read to her.
When it was almost time for dinner, Sesshomaru came into the room to see how things were going between his daughter and monk. Looking inside, the demon saw the monk playing with Rin. On his face, Sesshomaru saw a big smile. Quickly turning away from the scene, the demon then left the library and went to go find Jaken.
Months faded into a year and it was during Miroku’s time at the castle that his love for Rin had healed some of his wounded spirit and heart. She had won her way into his life. He loved the little girl as if she were her own daughter and he was for the first time glad that Inuyasha had asked Sesshomaru to take him to the castle.
Even though his heart began to heal, the young monk didn’t think he would find romantic love again. He had been so much in love with Sango that it hurt. Unfortunately she threw his love away and it was then that he knew love was just a fairytale made up by people who wish to live happily ever after with the person they chose to be with. After his betrayal, Miroku knew that he was never love again. Not if he could help it.
When Sesshomaru first took in the young monk he thought that he was nothing but an annoyance. Miroku was like any other human pathetic and weak; he had proven that by letting a woman have control over his life. But as the time past Sesshomaru learned that there was more to Miroku. Like Rin he was a complete and utter conundrum. Sure he could still see weakness in the young monk but he could also see his compassion and love for Rin. The demon lord knew he would never understand humans and their ways, but seeing the smiling on Miroku’s young face as he took care of the little girl he had raised from the dead, Sesshomaru found himself wanting to know more about the man he had let stay at his castle for the past year.
Miroku had just come in from the garden with Rin when Jaken approached them with a disgusted face. He hated that the young monk had been in his lord’s castle for a year. It was bad enough that Sesshomaru had taken in the disgusting little girl and now he had to take in that filthy man as well. Knowing that he had a job to do, Jaken put those thoughts out of his mind and said to the young man, “Lord Sesshomaru has requested that you eat dinner with him tonight.” With that the little toad turned in a huff and walked away leaving a very shocked Miroku behind.
During his whole time at the castle, Sesshomaru had never invited him to eat a meal with him. In fact most times he ate with Rin in the servants’ dinner room. It was odd that now the demon lord wanted to sit down with him especially since he didn’t talk to him or acknowledge him the whole time that he had been at the castle. Even though the demon lord had been uncivil to him for the past year didn’t mean he had to be. So Miroku decided that he would join Sesshomaru for dinner if only to talk to him about how well Rin was doing in school.
Later that night Sesshomaru sat at his large dining table waiting for his guest. As the night grew later and later, the demon lord began to growl in frustration at the monk’s tardiness. Finally Miroku enter wearing a green kimono trimmed with white. His hair which was usually pulled back in a ponytail was left free down his back. Even though Sesshomaru thought the human looked beautiful, he didn’t let his feeling show. He was the Lord of the West and he would not have anything relations with a weak human, especially one who could not provided him with an heir that would be a full demon.
Miroku who didn’t noticed, Sesshomaru even looking at him, sat down across the demon lord. On the table was all of the foods he loved and hardly ever got. Seeing all of these delights the young monk began to eat. As the night wore on, the young monk tried to make conversation with Sesshomaru but he was as silent as ever. Frustrated by the lack of conversation, Miroku asked “Why did you invite me to dinner if you didn’t even care to talk to me?”
“I wanted to get to know you monk. You have been at my castle for a year and I know nothing of you except that you take care of Rin.”
“Well if you want to get to know me you have to talk to me. You know ask me questions.” Miroku said as he grumbled.
“This Sesshomaru is sorry. I am not use to having company at dinner. As your host it was very honorable of me to ignore you.”
Shocked that Sesshomaru had actually apologized to him, Miroku said “Its okay, I understand. I will tell you anything you want to know.”
Grunting in acknowledgment, Sesshomaru asked “Do you still feel sad over your woman?”
“Yes, the hurt is still there, I still care deeply for her but I know now that I can never love her again.” He said sadly.
“I don’t understand how you could still care about someone who has betrayed you.”
“I don’t understand either Lord Sesshomaru. Please can we change the subject it still hurts to talk about her?” He asked wearily.
“If you wish. I would like to know how my daughter is doing in school.”
“She is an excellent student and very smart for someone her age. She wise beyond her years. If you don’t mind asking you a question Lord Sesshomaru when did you start thinking of Rin as your daughter?”
“Not that long ago. But this Sesshomaru will not discuss why his feeling for Rin has change so. I still think most humans are pathetic. They are selfish and don’t care who they hurt to get what they want.”
Knowing that he meant Inuyasha’s mother Miroku wisely said nothing and asked “Do you think me selfish and pathetic?”
“I use to. When you first came here all you care about was yourself and the woman that you had love for. But you have grown since your time here at the castle. You have learned to care for someone besides yourself. I see how much you love Rin and that is why I wanted to know more about you monk.”
Smirking Miroku ate the rest of his dinner with Sesshomaru in silence. He knew that no matter how much the demon lord denied it, there was a part of him that did care for humans; at least ones name Miroku and Rin. And for that he was glad. As much as he loved Rin, he missed having his friends and he hope that Sesshomaru would start to confide in his him as Inuyasha once had. Who knows he thought in amusement maybe this could be the beginning of a great friendship. Little did the young monk know that it would turn out to be more than that.
A month passed since his dinner with the demon lord and these between them had started to become less tense. Sesshomaru began to invite him to dinner more often and Miroku began to feel he was making progress with him. When he began to feel more comfortable with the demon lord, the monk began to tell him of his past. How he had grown up with no mother or father to take care of him. Of how his lechery had been a mask that even Sango couldn’t look past. He had even told Sesshomaru had he had never been in the arms of woman contrary to what his friends thought. But even though Miroku confided in the young lord, Sesshomaru still didn’t divulge anything about his past or why he had hated Inuyasha so much. All the lord did was listen and ask about the young monk’s life. Miroku had a feeling that when Sesshomaru did come clean with his past that it would finally mean the demon lord had started to trust him and that was something that he couldn’t wait for.
