A year of friendship with Sesshomaru past and with every day Miroku thanked Buddha that he was brought back to the land of the living. During his time getting to know Sesshomaru he learned a lot about the young lord’s past.
It turns out that Sesshomaru never really had a childhood. Born into the world of high society, the young demon learned at very early age that being loved a luxury. After the young demon lord’s mother died in child birth, he was raised by his wet nurse. His father would come to see by only every other month. As he grew up he learned the art of war and how any emotion on the battlefield would get him killed. He knew only killing and violent but never love for his father ignored the young lord ever chance he got.
Instead of spending time with his son, his heir, Inutaishou would leave his castle for month upon end. The when Sesshomaru reached what demon considered the age of maturity, the young demon lord found out that his father’s stolen moments away from the palace were spent in the arms of a human woman named Izayoi.
Wanting to see who his father was spending time with, Sesshomaru followed his father one night to Izayoi village. Looking at the human that his father loved more than him, he saw that she was pregnant. Soon Inutaishou would have another child, one that the young demon lord knew that his father would love more than him. Unfortunately for Sesshomaru, he was right. His father gave up his life for Inuyasha where as he wouldn’t even give his first born son a passing look.
Through out the years Sesshomaru built a wall around his heart, letting no one inside. He learned to hate Inuyasha with every fiber of his being. For little Inuyasha was the son that his father loved and not Sesshomaru himself. Then Rin came along and took care of him when he was injured. As she began to follow him, the walls around his heart began to break and soon he began to love the little girl in his care.
It was because of her he had learned to love again. Rin was also the reason why he had finally learned to forgive his father for the love he never gave him. Slowly Sesshomaru became more than the cold Lord of the West that demons feared. He was a caring youkai and now due his friendship and talks with Miroku, the young monk began to see Sesshomaru for who he really was. He wasn’t some heartless bastard that killed every one in his sight; he was a caring demon who brought back a little girl back to life and took in a depressed monk willing to kill himself for the woman he loved. Miroku knew he would always be grateful that Sesshomaru took him in and showed him a side of him that no person or demon had ever seen. He was glad to have a best friend like Sesshomaru and hope that things between would never change.
This was unfortunate for Sesshomaru was being to fall in love with the young monk.
When Sesshomaru took the young monk in, he thought the boy as nothing but a nuisance. During his first year at the castle the youkai totally ignored the human leaving Rin to be the monk’s only company. Then out some curiosity Sesshomaru decided that he needed to get to know the young man under his care and protection. That night when the demon lord invited Miroku to dinner was a turning point for him. It was then that he learned that there was more to the monk that meets the eye. So he offered his friendship and in exchange Miroku offered to tell Sesshomaru his past.
Like Sesshomaru, Miroku’s mother died in child birth, leaving the young boy in the care of his father Ryoku. Also like the young demon lord, his father never showed him love or attention. Instead he would leave him in the care of a family friend, Mushin, in order to follow Naraku’s trail. So the old drunk Mushin became like a father to young Miroku while his father searched for evil hanyou.
When his father did come home he would drill in his son’s head that if he died one day due to his wind tunnel that Miroku would too one day begin his search for Naraku. Ryoku also told him that he must find a woman to bear his son to insure the continuance of their line. Those were the only times that his father spoke to him. Any other time with his father was spent training and learning how to use the wind tunnel once he got it. Then when Miroku was only nine years old, his father was sucked in by his own wind tunnel. Once his father was gone, the curse passed down to him.
At the tender age of ten Miroku began his search for Naraku. His search was never easy and sometimes the young man came close to death. It was due those close calls that Miroku began to wear a mask of lechery and joviality. Every village he would go to he would ask a woman to bear his child but even when a maiden would say yes he never did anything about it. He believed that a child should come out of love not a need for a family to continue a quest.
Then at the age of seventeen he met up with Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kagome and for the first time in his life he had friends, ones that he could talk to when he had problems and laugh with. He enjoyed his bantering with Inuyasha and the two became best friends. As their journey continued and he got to know the group more, Miroku felt as if he could let his mask slip but when Sango came into the picture and he saw how beautiful she was he quickly put the mask back on. He fell in love with the demon slayer hard and fast, but since he was not well versed in the ways of women, his attempts at tell Sango how he felt about her turned in perverted overtures. It wasn’t until Inuyasha defeat Naraku that Miroku could finally voice to Sango how he much he loved her. It was then he asked her to marry him and she said yes. Of course Sesshomaru knew the rest of story after that. Sango, who was secretly cheating on Miroku with another man, left the poor monk at the altar. This of course left the poor monk alone with his broken heart.
When Sesshomaru heard the hardships that Miroku went through threw during his life, the young demon began to respect him. Soon he began to look at the monk in a different light. He wasn’t the pathetic human he once thought the young man to be. Instead he was brave and courageous. As the months past and their friendship grew, the young demon lord began to watch Miroku more and more outside his bedroom window. Every time he saw the young man his heart would flutter and his cheeks would blush.
Then one night while he was sleeping, Sesshomaru dreamt that Miroku came into his bedroom and gave him a sweet and tender kiss. Not only was the monk kissing him but he was kissing Miroku back. It was then that the young demon lord knew that he felt something other than friendship towards the young man. What he felt for Miroku was more what for his own daughter and he knew that without a doubt he was in love with Miroku. Now if he could only tell the monk how felt. He hoped that he could find the words to tell him how much he loved him without getting hurt in the process.
While Sesshomaru dwelt on a way to tell Miroku how he fell about him, the young monk remained blissfully unaware of how his best friend felt about him. Instead the young man continued to teach Rin and spend his time talking to the demon lord, but each day that was spent with the monk was like torture to Sesshomaru.
All he could think about was how he would like to kiss Miroku’s soft full lips. His dreams about making love to the young man became so vivid that the great dog demon began to shy away from his friend and Miroku began to notice. At first he thought nothing about the times that Sesshomaru declined to spend time with him, but as he saw Sesshomaru less and less, the young monk began to worry.
Missing his friendship and easy camaraderie with the youkai, Miroku decided to confront the great demon lord about the distance he was keeping. So one day after leaving Rin in the care of Jaken the young man approached Sesshomaru, who was resting in Rin’s garden, to tell his friend how he felt about being ignored.
The young demon was dreaming about making love to his beautiful monk when he heard footsteps approaching. Looking up he saw the man he had fallen in love with looking down at him. Seeing the sad look in his eyes, the young demon lord asked "What is wrong my friend?"
"Are you sure you still want to call me that my Lord?"
"What do you mean?" Sesshomaru asked curiously.
"I mean that for the last couple of weeks you have been ignoring me. Do you not want to be my friend anymore?"
"Yes Miroku I still want to be your friend." said the demon lord seriously.
"They tell me why is it you no longer wish to see me?" said Miroku sadly.
"This Sesshomaru will tell you the truth even if his friend does not like his answer."
"Nothing you can tell will change our friendship Sesshomaru."
"Fine then this Sesshomaru will tell you. I am in love with you Miroku." He said passionately.
Looking at his friend sadly Miroku said "I am sorry Sesshomaru but I don’t feel the same way. I don’t think I ever will."
Not wanting the young monk see any emotion out of him, Sesshomaru turn away from his friend and walked back to the castle. Even though his heart was broke he still hoped that one day Miroku would learn to love him.
After Sesshomaru was gone from his sight, Miroku took a deep breath and sighed. Turning away from the castle, the young monk went to a river that was just outside the perimeter of the demon lord’s palace to contemplate what had just happened. Once there he thought about what his friend had told him. He couldn’t believe that the man he had been having erotic dream about for the last two months was in love with him. What was worse was that he had lied through his teeth to the man he was falling in love with.
Miroku had always been an honest man but when it came to matters of the heart he always closed himself off. When he first fell in love with Sango, he hid his feelings with his lechery and now that he was falling in love with Sesshomaru, he was now hiding his feeling with a lie. His lie would save him from the pain of feeling heartache once again in his life. He though it was better to remain friends with the man he love rather than starting a relationship with Sesshomaru that would only end in failure. So Miroku resolved to never tell his friend his real feelings no matter what the cost.
After his decision, Miroku made his way back to the castle. He had just cleared the forest where the river was when he heard a noise coming from behind him. He was about to turn around when something swiftly grabbed him and kidnapped him. Finally after what seemed like hours, he was dropped near another palace just slightly smaller than Sesshomaru’s. Once he got himself orientated, the young monk took a look around and saw himself surrounded by cat demons.
As they continued to guard him, the leader came forward to inspect the young man. Seeing the lovely creature in front of him, Kasshoku, the leader of the cat demon tribe of the south smiled.
“So this is the human that has been living with the great dog demon of the west.”
“Yes, my lord Kasshoku,” answered one of the guards.
“Good, this human will prove to be of some value to us. With him as bait, we can capture the great Sesshomaru and take over his lands.”
“That is a great idea sir.”
“Of course it is. And while Sesshomaru takes his time to get his little human, I think I will have some fun with him. Take this beautiful specimen to my room.”
“As you wish my lord,” said two of the lord’s guards.
Once the orders were given, Miroku was dragged to Kasshoku’s chambers. After he was placed in the room, a message was sent to Sesshomaru telling of his demand and the kidnapping of his beloved human.
Sesshomaru had been searching for his young friend every where when Jaken came running towards him with Kasshoku’s letter. Grabbing it out of the little imp’s hands he began to read it. Once learning that Miroku had been taken by his enemies, Sesshomaru felt rage overcome all of his demon senses. Due to his extreme rage he changed into his demon form charging towards Kasshoku’s palace.
As the Lord of the West made his way to the man he loved, Miroku still stood in the chambers of the leader of the southern cat tribe worrying about what the cat demon was going to do to him. He had been shaking for a few minutes before Kasshoku finally entered the room. Seeing the young man’s fear evident on his face, the lord smirked at Miroku as he approached him.
“What shall we do to you my pretty human?”
“Please let me go,” Miroku begged.
“Now why would I want to let you go when I could have so much fun torturing you? I’ll make is so Sesshomaru wouldn’t even recognize your body when I am through with you.”
Taking out a knife, Kasshoku approached him with the soul purpose of mutilating Miroku’s body. It was in that moment that the young monk realized that he might never see his beloved dog demon again. And that the last thing that he had said to the man he loved was a lie.
