My mom saw a post with this title while reading up on the current taiga drama (which, like the last several we are not able to watch *sigh* without subtitles).

That sounds like your mom...! (I pretty much leave subtitles on all the time when I watch Star Trek, just in case I need to catch this or that obscure person/place/or spatial anomaly...)

Oo, the Babylon Berlin tour sounds pretty amazing (esp. if you're actually allowed to enter each of those establishments like if you were a normal denizen, and not like a museum) I'd still prefer Atlantic City, if only in my mind... ^^;

Ha ha ha, well, that's her. I can't understand enough of the dramas (and the further back they are in time the language is different enough) to share them with my mom either...

Oh? You mean like they're speaking in more archaic language? (there's a TON of those in Chinese, too ... takes many years of study to be fluent.)

Oo, I didn't mention, but at WonderCon I had a number of Trekkies admiring my "Mister Pickerd" poster. One young couple was pointing each out to their 5 year-old son and he guessed them all correctly! (apparently his favorite is Geordi ^^)

Yeah, there are many many iterations of Japanese through the years. Like, say, if it's a late 1800s show, I could probably pass on the majority of the dialogue, but anything earlier, no dice.

(though sometimes from watching the shows set in the Sengoku period, for instance, I've learned some general vocabulary- haha-ue for "Mother" and chichi-ue for "Father" (these are both pretty fancy terms though) Sometimes there'll be a phrase used so often in a given show that it makes the list of 'most used words of (said year)', like Matsu's "私におまかせてくだせいませ/Watashi ni omakasetekudasaimase" ("Please leave everything to me") -man, I still remember that one since 2002! *lol*)
