Omigod, I love this so much. Excellent, EXCELLENT characterization.

I think there could be a Northstar (or something like it) in One Piece, and there are plenty of reasons why it wouldn't be reliable on the Grandline. The most obvious one is the unpredictable nature of the weather. It's no use using the stars if you can't see them. Or, perhaps the star could only be seen from the Northern Hemisphere (like East Blue). The Grandline is on the equator.

I'm really glad you liked it! And that's a good point about the Northstar. It's just something that hasn't really been addressed in One Piece, so really anything is possible.

I majorly need to check out your recent ZoTash story - I see its radio casette player, that's a tough one! Can't wait to see what you did!

The Guide Wikipedia has some nifty articles on celestial navigation, dead reckoning (the form of navigation that Nami is most often seen doing), and Polaris.
