Title: Fate Has Ways
Pairing: WonKyu (I can’t believe I’m writing to this pairing!)
Rating/Genre: R / AU, Romance, Comedy
Summary: They urged him to start a new adventure - the kind Kyuhyun isn’t sure he is ready to take. But with flashy lights, stunning wardrobes and a man who evidently needs him (and his body), Kyuhyun may have to think otherwise.
Other summary: Kyuhyun is but a caretaker who decides on staying where he is. Siwon is a designer who’s willing to take a creative risk just to reach. One who wants nothing to do with the future and other who wants to create a future. It is no coincidence they meet, inevitable as it is.
--
Scenarios like these weren’t new, especially to Kyuhyun’s case. An intern comes in, falls in love to Kyuhyun, woos him with date invitations and ends up cursing his existence when Kyuhyun declines everything with outright snark and sarcasm. At one point, there was an intern who actually came onto Kyuhyun that the latter literally took a nice punch at him and yelled at his assailant to go out and never come back to this quiet Nursing Home.
The seniors watched amusedly at the fuming caretaker, hailing him to come to their area to have The Talk.
“Kyuhyun, that’s the fourth man you turned down,” old man Kim said with the old ladies nodding behind him. “Wasn’t he nice to you? I thought you might actually like him?”
Kyuhyun snorted, his facial expression unpleasant in contrast with his nicely ironed, white nurse inform. He didn’t want to exactly share how that intern had his hands somewhere questionable just hours ago. Have lunch together, my ass.
“Ah, well,” Kyuhyun began; easing a calmed looked now and not wanting to scare off his patients with his almost-demonic glare. As a nurse, he was expected to be inviting and not frightening. “I have important matters to give attention to, like taking care of you guys. Suitors are… not really something I welcome right now. I don’t even know why every time we’re going to have a new assistant, this happens…”
Old woman Lee, the most optimistic one in the bunch, waved her scarf and catching everyone’s interest. “Our little Kyuhyun’s so uptight! You should loosen up a bit! We’re not exactly disabled to be watched over every time. We want you to have some fun!”
The elderly people were nodding, the room buzzing with approving murmurs and encouragement. Kyuhyun sighed, thinking that this was the first time he was ganged up by the seniors. Who knew they could be so… teenager-y?
Still. Fun? When was the last time he actually went out? Kyuhyun kind of forgot, too engrossed to be working as a part-time caretaker instead.
Because that what was he promised to his mother before she passed away.
“I’m fine right here, with you,” Kyuhyun interrupted as he began taking the empty trays of lunch, stopping short by the door. “And I’m happy where I am now. This is more fun than dealing with materialistic people and their stupid money and cars.”
The one who was so busy with her knitting tools at the couch, Mrs. Park said, “Sonny, not all men are like that.” Finally she set down her material and fixed her glasses, eyeing Kyuhyun with a smile that was disarmingly knowing. “And perhaps, we want you to be out there like all college students are. With friends, hanging out and enjoying life. You’ve been spending all your time here, young man. See the world.” She then grinned, her perfectly aligned dentures flashing. “A handsome guy like you should go out.”
Then the room erupted with more approving sounds. It made the Kyuhyun turn a little redder than he could take.
“I’m not… handsome.” Kyuhyun grumbled, turning away and left at that. The seniors sighed as they watched his retreating back. The elderly huddled close, crowding as they speak in hush whispers.
“We need to do something; otherwise he’d end up socially awkward.” Mrs. Lee said, wringing the scarf anxiously. “I don’t want him ending up like my grandson who stays nowhere besides his gaming consoles, all holed up in his room.”
“I understand where you’re going with this,” old man Kim agreed. “But, how? It’s not like we’re just going to wait for an opportunity to come out for Kyuhyun.”
Suddenly, Mrs. Park perked up, “Ah! The computer! Them things with the internet! Let’s find Kyuhyun a new job on the internet!”
The glee on Mrs. Lee’s face was rather obvious; the other elderly people were backing out to this suddenly planned plan, deciding that this unexpected arrangement was happening in such haste. “Are we doing this secretly? Boy, do I feel young again!”
“I, uh, I don’t know how to use the computer too. Do you?”
“Shh! Kyuhyun is coming back!”
When Kyuhyun arrived with a tray of hot chocolate on mugs, they sent him an eerie smile. Kyuhyun quirked a brow at that, suspicious. It was one thing to see old people swarming together like bees on a flower but it was another to feel something was up and he had no idea what.
But, oh well. It was probably nothing.

“Say, Ryeowook. Are you still putting up that wanted flier? Can we just, uh, put it down? I’m can pretty much handle the laundry, cleaning and changing.” Kyuhyun said the next day, coming up to the man in charge at the reception area. Ryeowook greeted him with a warm, Thursday smile.
While Kyuhyun tended primarily the old folks at the Nursing Home and other chores, his partner Ryeowook - not much difference in age, quiet - was in charge with the records and information. He was the only person who could look at Kyuhyun without throwing himself at him. Actually, he could throw pillows at Kyuhyun for messing up his records from time to time.
“Are you sure? You’re almost doing everything, Kyu. It’s kinda scary, you know? You still have school too.”
“Like you don’t.” Kyuhyun reached for the cabinet of medicines behind the counter, inspecting today’s stocks and quantities. “Besides, I have more free time than you. I’m not exactly taking up all my subjects all at once, right? So I can do more.”
“Huh.”
Kyuhyun looked back, watching Ryeowook inspecting his laptop. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t remember accessing to these sites before. Weird.” Ryeowook leaned back, wondering. “And I don’t remember looking at classified ads either.”
“Maybe your mom used it or something.” Kyuhyun helped, before grabbing his white nurse uniform and petting down his almost octopus, brown hair. He ought to actually have it trimmed within the week.
“Maybe.” But Ryeowook still looked skeptic and Kyuhyun let him be, remembering that it was medicine time and he had to bring the seniors out for fresh air.
“Ah, Kyuhyun. You’re here.”
The caretaker nodded, shimming into his coat and greeting the old man. “Hello, Mr. Kim. It’s time for the sun again.” He gestured the door leading to the garden that had nice bushes and pretty flowers (maintained by, of course, Kyuhyun himself). Surprisingly, the outdoors was rather pleasant for today.
“I love that time.” Mr. Kim smiled slowly, features wrinkling immensely due to old age. Kyuhyun saw beauty in there instead, noting how simply things like these bring simple joys. “I hope today would be a good day.” Mr. Kim added.
Kyuhyun hoped so too.
“I’ll go get the others. And let’s have nice walk in the garden.”
The moment he stepped back into the hall, loud murmuring reached him from the reception area. Really loud, boisterous murmuring. They had guests?
“Ryeowook? Is someone at the-
Kyuhyun stepped into a room he wasn’t sure he recognized anymore, not with several suited men in black barricading the reception table. There were men by the windows too. Stereotypically-speaking, these men were big, had sunglasses and were… fair-skinned. Straight from an action movie? He watched them interrogating small Ryeowook.
“Kyuhyun!” Ryeowook’s head popped up when he saw Kyuhyun at the door, before running to him like he had just seen a ghost. “They are looking for you!”
Kyuhyun definitely remembered not owing anyone money so mafia men were out of the identity question.
“You Cho Kyuhyun?” One of the big men (and surely, they were all relatively big) asked with a gruff voice. Kyuhyun challenged him with his chin up and eyes fierce.
“Yeah, what about it?”
Ryeowook pressed himself more to Kyuhyun, timidly frightened.
And then the men exchanged a nod of acknowledgement when the ring leader said, “Alright, found him. Bring Sir in and the meeting will commence in seven seconds.”
“The hell’s going on?” Kyuhyun demanded before he got surrounded with another set of suited men, Ryeowook not beside him anymore (though he could hear him running back to where the seniors were, probably telling them the situation and explaining the delay of sun and medicine time. Responsible, Ryeowook was).
“Mister Cho Kyuhyun, our boss wishes to talk to you.” The same big man told him, eyes not on Kyuhyun but to the group that was advancing to them.
Kyuhyun was ready to fume; the unpleasant feeling bubbling inside the pit of his stomach. Some stranger wanted to talk to him, to go through this… entire thing? “Did you really have to barge in like a gang of sophisticated hooligans? You will scare the tenants here! What the hell is going on? Are you loan sharks? Just what in the world-
“Hello.”
It made him look.
The smile had him stunned, and also the dimple. Crisp formal wear with a neatly fixed hair. The hand extended to him was inviting, hopeful and Kyuhyun did not miss how from one second the eyes twinkled in anticipation and then at awe.
And then there was something growing more into that. Amazement.
The man swallowed, rudely staring and saying, “You really are beautiful.” The man came closer, hand stretched and took Kyuhyun’s boneless hand to him, finishing, “You have to model for me. You must.”
Kyuhyun wasn’t sure which hand he used but a punch was still a punch and the man in front of him had his pants soiled to the ground and the suited men running to his aid, gasping. He was just as surprised as the man on the floor that had his reflexes moving.
Kyuhyun’s chest was tight, face heated like a yelling kettle and thoughts disarray, watching but not seeing the picture clearly of what was happening.
If there was anything Kyuhyun didn’t like was anything unexpected. This, today, was beyond anything he could imagine. A good-looking man whose face was that of an angel’s and touches were electrifying, wanted Kyuhyun to model for him? Just where the hell did that come from?
