Have you guys read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman? Should I read them? I'm skeptical because I read the first 30 pages of The Golden Compass and was pretty unimpressed. Additionally, Elvi gave me these books and since I have such a low opinion of her, I don't want to read them. Maybe I should just sell them on Amazon ( Read more... )

I'm just mudding through the beginning so I dunno, maybe I'm being too critical. But I believe you, and I shall try!

OMG.. I love The Golden Compass :D I'll admit it was a little slow at first, but being a huge fantasy fan, I can say it turned out to be one of my favorites (like that's not a long list? XD)! I whole-heartedly suggest that you give it a second chance... which reminds me, I need to go check to see if sequels to that were ever published >.>
And with the HP books, personally, I've just been waiting on them each until after the movies come out... I'd love to read the next one, but considering how much each one seems to deviate more and more from the movies, I don't want to ruin the movies for myself XD
Sorry... get me talking about books, and I go on for hours XD;

There were sequels published! The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. I will give it a second chance.

OH THE MOVIES. Don't get me started! I recognized that it is difficult to strigently go by the book, but movie 4 left out A LOT. And in book five, they are leaving out even more! SIGH.

i love his dark materials too. i read them all last year really quickly. they're kind of for young adults and fantasyish, so if you're not into that kind of stuff..then i wouldn't suggest it.

I am, but I need to be able to suspend disbelief. Like, HP is so human that I can look past there being no real life hippogriffs. lol

I think I'm the only one out of the loop here.... I've heard of the books you speak of, but I have yet to purchase them, let alone read them.

I've actually started a new series myself... but again it's my genre... you know cheasy romance for teens but lucky me this one has vamps and werewolves in it, to spice things up ^.^
