"Well?" Mal questions Simon, his hand resting on his empty holster.

"I don't know." Simon runs a frustrated hand through his hair. "She's hysterical; every time I attempt to separate them to examine one of them, she freaks out and wraps her self tighter around Jayne. Frankly, I'm surprised he can still breathe."

"What's Jayne doin'?" Mal grinds his teeth.

"Trying to calm her down." Simon clenches his fists, hating the fact that he's the reason for his sister's hysterical state. "It seems to work too until I move too close."

"So you ain't got to examine her at all?" Zoe asks.

"No." Simon shakes his head. "I haven't gotten within a foot of her."

"That's bout to stop now." Mal pushes past the gathered crew and stalks into the infirmary. "Jayne, it's time to give her back to her brother."

"NO!" River screams, the sound muffled by Jayne's chest. "No. No. No. No. No."

"Shui nu shen, calm down." Jayne soothes, his hand rubbing on her back. "Right here."

"They want to take her back." River pulls away from Jayne's chest and cups his face, ensuring that he looks at her. "Dress her up so she's just a doll again; doesn't want her to be a real girl."

"Mei-mei." Simon protests.

River turns to face her brother. "You don't see her as she really is only how she was; how she can never be again. She….I can't be your little mei-mei anymore, Simon, I can't."

"Hey, none of that." Jayne turns River's face back to his and wipes her tears off with his thumbs. "Just cause you ain't that fourteen year old genius no more don't mean you can't still be his mei-mei."

"He doesn't want me for his mei-mei." River whispers, her bottom lip trembling. "Not the me I really am; he only wants the girl I was before."

"River, that's not true." Simon protests.

"A shot here, a few pills there." River says. "Cut and mold to make her into what you want. She's too unsettling and must be made into something normal."

Jayne grits his teeth, recalling multiple times when he's told the doc 'shut her up'. Hell, that's all they ever did, tried to keep the 'crazy' girl from be crazy. Ain't a one of em that listened to her or accepted her as she is. Hell, before, he tried to escape her crazy talk as fast as he could but now, after bein' alone with her for six weeks and hearin' it daily, he's come to find it comforting. Still don't change the fact that six weeks ago, he woulda told the doc to shut her up.

"Don't." River pleads, cupping Jayne's face. "No more anger."

"Shui nu shen, it ain't that simple." Jayne argues.

"Is too." River argues. "Very simple."

"Think you best let your brother check you out." Jayne says.

River shakes her head. "Not until you promise."

"Promise what?"

"That you won't let the captain or Simon make you feel guilty." River says.

Jayne smirks. "Hell, shui nu shen, since when do I feel guilty?"

River just eyes him.

Jayne runs a hand through his shaggy hair and nods.

River smiles and kisses his cheek. "Then I will let Simon examine me." Then she goes to jump off his lap.

"Whoa now, you're gonna go get some panties on first." Jayne snags her waist. "In fact, why don't you go take a shower and get dressed then come back here for your brother to examine."

"Okay." River agrees, turning around to face him. "Are you coming with me?"

Jayne's eyes glaze over somewhat and he starts to answer when he hears a cough. He looks over River's head to see Mal and Simon both glarin' somethin' fierce at him, Mal's hand restin' on his missing gun. "Think I best stay here and talk to your brother and Mal."

River looks over her shoulder at the pissed off men and moves closer to Jayne until her body is flush with his. She wraps her arms around his neck and lifts up on her tiptoes until they're face level. Then she pulls his mouth to hers in a very deep and sensual kiss.

Jayne cups River's ass, holdin' her against him and keepin' the skimpy fabric of her skirt over her bare cheeks. Ridin' the extreme lust she always brings out in him, he kneads the firm globes under his hands, completely forgetting about the people watching them.

Simon winces and looks away, completely unable to see his sister as the person she is. As the woman she is.

Mal clenches and unclenches his fists, knowin' if he had his gorram gun right now, the merc done be riddled with holes. "Jayne, that's ruttin' enough."

"Huh?" Jayne grunts, pulling away from River's mouth. "Mal?"

"River, I think it's time you went and took that shower." Mal advises.

River turns to look at them again and licks her swollen lips. "Very well, captain." She kisses Jayne's cheek sweetly and leaves the infirmary, not looking at any of the crew as she passes them.

"What the hell did you do to my sister?" Simon advances on the merc, his eyes full of anger.

"Nothin' she didn't want done to her." Jayne pushes the doctor aside.

"Jayne, you best be sittin' your ass down, right now." Mal orders.

"I gotta get a shower Mal." Jayne says. "That or follow River to hers; your choice."

"Ten minutes." Mal growls.

"Fine." Jayne grumbles, pushing past the crew to head towards the bunks.

"This isn't right." Simon mutters, leaning back against the counter. "This isn't my sister, he did something to her."

"She's right, isn't she?" Inara says. "You're completely unwilling to accept her as she really is. Are you going to drug her again, maybe erase all memories of the six weeks she spent with Jayne? I mean, it won't really matter will it, her brain has already been warped to fit the Alliance's view of what she should be, why not fix her to your specifications?"

"That's not fair." Simon protests.

"You're not being fair." Inara crosses her arms over her chest and glares at the two men in front of her. "They were gone for six weeks, six weeks Simon and instead of coming back worse than when she left, she's more lucid than when she left. And in case you didn't notice, River kissed Jayne not the other way around. She was plainly trying to point out the fact that she is no longer the little girl that you see her as but you refuse to see it. You should be grateful that she's back but instead you're still trying to turn her back into the fourteen year old she was. That's not fair to her."

"She's a seventeen year old mentally traumatized girl." Simon says angrily. "Excuse me if I don't think it's appropriate for her to be in a sexual relationship with a man twice her age."

"Excuse me if I don't think that's your choice." Inara replies.

"Nara, maybe he's right.." Kaylee whispers. "You know how she was fore she left and she weren't stable enough to be in a relationship. You think six weeks is really gonna change that?"

"Six weeks with the right person might be." Inara replies. "Six weeks with someone who accepts her as she is. Six weeks with someone who isn't constantly trying to fix her might enable her to find out who she really is."

"I'm not constantly trying to change her." Simon argues. "And this argument is completely pointless; she's my sister and my responsibility and if I say this….relationship isn't going to happen anymore, then it isn't."

"Really?" Inara arches an eyebrow.

"Really." Simon says firmly. "Mal, are you going to back me on this decision?"

"Hell, yes." Mal replies. "I don't think there's a person here who won't."

Wash, Book, and Kaylee move to stand beside Simon and Mal while Zoe moves to Inara's side.

"Wifey?" Wash looks shocked. "You can't really be supporting….this.."

"There was a time when someone tried to stop me from marryin' a playful, immature pilot." Zoe says. "What if I listened to him?"

"It's my boat." Mal glares at his first mate. "My crew and I say this ain't happenin'."

"And I say that's not your decision." River steps back into the infirmary, her hair wet and wearing one of her old dresses.

"Mei-mei, you're too unstable to be making these types of decisions." Simon says, using a soft tone. "Jayne took advantage of you…"

"I masturbated with him sleeping only inches away." River interrupts, ignoring the gasps around her. "He gave me numerous times to say no but I wouldn't. Then, when he wanted to leave it as only a one-night stand, I seduced him. Every night, numerous times…"

"STOP!" Simon shouts. "I can't hear this."

"I love him, Simon." River says simply. "I need him and I will have him. The only person that will stop me is him. I forced him into a relationship he would have never sought had he not been trapped…."

"Gorramit, shui nu shen, we done talked bout this." Jayne pushes into the room and cups her face. "You ain't trapped me into nothin'. I wanted you then and…."

"Now?" River whispers, looking up at him with big eyes.

"Don't start cryin' again." Jayne practically begs. "Can't handle that right now."

"You didn't answer." River says quietly.

"You know I want you now." Jayne replies, stroking the wet hair from her face. "Always gonna want my shui nu shen, ain't nothin' ever gonna change that. 'Member what I said?"

"Yours." River smiles up at him. "I am yours and you are mine."

"Damn straight." Jayne leans down to kiss her forehead, the ten minutes they spent apart seemin' like hours. It makes him feel like a gorram sissy but he needs her, hell, he's spent the last six weeks with her and her alone so it shouldn't surprise him. "Your brother check you over yet?"

"No." River replies.

Jayne picks her up and sets her one the sick bed. He starts to move away but she grabs his hand so he leans against the side, rubbin' his thumb gently over her knuckles.

Simon grits his teeth and puts on a pair of gloves. He works through the tests methodically, testing every reaction and vital but to his disappointment, finds nothing wrong with her.

"You want me to be sick?" River gasps, looking up at her brother with devastated eyes.

"What?" Jayne grunts, looking between the siblings.

"He wants me to be sick." River's bottom lip trembles. "So he can fix me. He doesn't want this to be the real me because he doesn't approve. She's a disappointment now, he threw his entire life away from someone no better than a rim-planet whore."

"Mei-mei." Simon gasps, startled by her language.

"No." River growls. She turns and launches herself at Jayne, knowing he'll catch her before she falls. "She's not….I'm not your mei-mei anymore; you don't want me to be."

"Sorry, shui nu shen." Jayne tightens his arms around her now sobbing body and hoists her closer. "Thought you was wrong; thought your go'se brother loved ya nuf to accept you exactly as you are. Guess I was wrong."

"Wish they never came." River sobs loudly, her head turning to look at her brother. "Wish they never rescued us. Wish we were home."

"Me too." Jayne growls, carrying her shakin' body out of the infirmary. "Me too, shui nu shen."

"Way to go, Doctor Tam." Inara says sarcastically. "The one person in her life that she's always trusted and counted on to support her just treated her like the monsters that tortured her for years by trying to fix what's not broken." Inara gathers up her skirts and chases after the merc. "Jayne!"

"Nara, I ain't in…"

"I'm leaving." Inara says. "I was planning on leaving before you two got taken but now that you're back, I'm leaving."

Jayne turns to look at her, River cradled delicately against his chest. "Why you tellin' me this?"

"The training center I'm going to isn't far from here and it's out of the Alliance's rein of control." Inara says. "You two could take your leave there until you figure out what you want to do."

"Why you bein' so nice to me?" Jayne asks bluntly. "Hell, I done thought you'd be right behind Mal, backin' him up."

"River's mature enough and smart enough to know what she wants." Inara replies. "And I don't want to see her forced into a life she never wanted just because she wants to make everyone else happy."

"Like you." River whispers.

Inara nods.

"Thanks, Nara." Jayne says. "Might take you up on that." He then nods at the companion and starts back down the hall.

"Inara, what the gorram hell did you just do?" Mal asks angrily.

"Gave them a choice." Inara replies. "The choice you just tried to take from them."

"Congratulations, sir, you found them." Zoe hands him back his gun. "And pushed them off your boat fore they even had a chance to settle back in."

-

"Shui nu shen, it's a'right." Jayne soothes as he sits down on his surprisingly clean bed. Hell, his whole bunk is cleaner than when he left; Kaylee musta spent some time down here.

"No." River whimpers. "Not alright, she's not alright."

"Why you gotta be alright for?" Jayne nudges her face with his. "Why can't ya just be you?"

River cocks her head to the side. "It really doesn't bother you anymore, does it?"

"Naw." Jayne grins at her. "So you ain't quite normal, don't mean you're broken or somethin'. You're just different is all. Special like."

River urges Jayne to lie down and cuddles into his chest. "Jayne?"

"Yeah, shui nu shen?"

"I love you." River whispers.

"I know." Jayne bends his head down and nuzzles her lips. "Love you too."

A sob catches in River's throat and tears roll down her face. "Really?"

Jayne brushes the hair out of River's face. "Really."

River smiles against Jayne's mouth and rolls on top of him. "I am going to make love to you."

"And I'm gonna let ya." Jayne smirks, his hands grippin' her hips. "Shui nu shen, you can't go runnin' round the boat nekkid but you can when we're in my bunk."

River smiles and slowly pulls her dress up her body, being sure to trace her fingers over her belly.

"Mmm, shui nu shen, you know just what I like, don't ya?" Jayne rumbles.

"Mm hmm." River murmurs, her fingers tracing random patterns over her pale skin. "Know my Jayne just like he knows his River."

"Damn straight." Jayne pulls her down so that her bare tits mesh against his bare chest. "Know just what you like." He kisses her deeply, his tongue mating with hers while his hands kneed her ass.

River purrs happily against his chest. "Yes, you do."
