Well, here's a movie I'll add to my "never-see" list fredtk August 11 2008, 03:26:33 UTC
Even if I weren't predisposed to avoid most horror/slasher movies, the real violence toward animals would be a deal-breaker for me. The things you described are sickening and unnecessary. There's no reason they couldn't use animatronic puppets or something like that instead. Or better yet, have the camera cut away from the violent act an instant before it happens, and show other characters' reactions to it, which can be even more effective than actually showing the violence.

Every last cocksucker involved in the making of this movie should get a savage beating and then do some serious time in prison.

I didn't think my contempt for humanity could grow any more intense, but the fact that there's an audience for this kind of fucking garbage makes me hate people more than ever. :(

Well this was a low-budget Italian film from the late 70s / early 80s, so animatronic puppets weren't exactly in the budget.

The real question is, why were these animal deaths even needed? I mean, I KNOW why they were included, they were used to add realism to the film, so that the viewer would actually believe what he was seeing happen to the human characters of the film (the rape scenes, the human deaths and cannibalism) was real too. But the animal scenes just weren't necessary, IMO. That's the kicker to them - the film itself is actually a pretty GOOD film on its own (subjectively, of course, as this is clearly not a film for everyone, even if you're a horror movie fan), hence my rating. The animal deaths were just needless. And that was my reaction to seeing them. I usually get angry at purposeless violence against animals (I can't watch those Animal Cops shows on Animal Planet, it just pisses me off too fucking much to see an animal neglected or hurt), but this didn't leave me furious, it just was depressing.

Just hearing about this made me depressed and angry...furious, actually. It's one thing if it's all fake--there's a certain level of violence that is just too much for me (I mean, come on, when it goes beyond a certain point, it's just sadistic), but if it's done with stunt people, special effects, etc., then I wouldn't necessarily consider it a total piece of shit. If the violence toward animals you described weren't real, I might've been able to sit through this movie, and maybe even have a few good things to say about it.

But knowing that stuff is real...it's a deal-breaker for me. There's no way in hell I could find anything good to say about a movie that has that kind of shit in it. As you said, it's needless--but more than that, it's just cruel and sadistic. The fact that the cast and crew of that film abused and killed those animals indicates that they thought it was okay to do so, and that I can't abide. For me at least, that ruins the whole movie, and in fact I think it doesn't deserve any more respect than a dog turd in ( ... )
