Masada was a fortification held by the Jewish resistance atop a mountain plateau after the Romans conquered Judea in the first century AD. After the legion sent to overtake it failed to breach the outer wall they started building a humongous ramp on one side of the mountain (this they could do, because they were the friggin' Romans); because they knew there was no way they could defeat the Romans after they got around the wall, the Jews defending the fortress chose mass suicide over slavery. (Because their religion forbade suicide they actually drew lots and killed each other until there was one guy left to commit suicide, but anyway.) They also set the whole place on fire--except the storage rooms, to show the Romans they had plenty of food and chose the time of their own death.

The empty settlement-looking things reminded me of it, is all.

Oh yeah i remember hearing about that in elementary school. And the romans really did like their ramps.
