Character name: Alice Margatroid
Fandom: Touhou Project
Timeline: Post Touhou Hisoutensoku
Age: She's been alive for at least 70 years, she personally doesn't remember how old she is. Physically, she looks about 17-19.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Alice is a Youkai Magician. In short, she aged much much slower than a human although not immune from death or physical harm.
Her specialty as a Magician is to attack using small dolls. They have small lances and are large in number, the definition of a drone army. Alice also has a habit of packing them full of gunpowder. However the dolls have a major fallback in that Alice has to control them using thin and almost invisible string. The dolls are not free moving and therefore if Alice is distracted or injured to the point where she cannot concentrate all of her dolls will begin to drop from the air. However, her skills in creating and manipulating the dolls are second to none in Gensokyo and she is well known for her skill.
Alice is also capable of danmaku. In Gensokyo everyone uses a system of spellcards which is a non lethal way of carrying out fights. Otherwise everyone in Gensokyo would have killed each other off by now since even everyday conversations tend to end in a throwdown. Alice's spellcards focus on magic spells she came up with her own and are often a combination of her own magic and the use of her dolls.
How would they use their abilities?: Alice wouldn't really use her abilities to help or harm anyone but herself. She won't cause widespread panic and destruction because, in her mind, she gains nothing from this. But she also really isn't likely to randomly save people unless she likes you or she would benefit from it in some way.
Appearance: Alice is short, petite, and honestly looks much more like a porcelain doll instead of a person. Her eyes, depending on the canon material, are blue, green, yellow, or brown (she has one of the most inconsistent eye colors in canon) but her wavy light blond hair always remains a few inches above shoulder length. She constantly wears a huge poofy blue dress with a white shawl ontop of it. Along with her red headband, pink ribbons, darker blue trim on her shawl, brown boots, and black stockings, Alice somehow manages to wear seven colors at all times. She's got skills man.
Background/Personality: The events before Mystic Square and in between Mystic Square and Perfect Cherry Blossom are all headcanon. Zun never came up with an explanation between Alice's differences between the two games and the likelihood he will is zero.
Alice was born in England to two upstanding middle class parents. A freak accident allowed the couple and their newborn baby to be sucked into Gensokyo. Unfortunately, Gensokyo really isn't human friendly as canonly, it's been stated that lots of youkai eat humans so therefore it really isn't a stretch to assume that her parents were eaten. The baby somehow was left abandoned by it's parents when it was found by Shinki's maid, Yumeko. Yumeko took Alice back to Makai to be presented to Shinki. Shinki, curiously, looked over the baby Alice and decided completely on a whim that she would become the baby's adopted mother. Luckily for everyone involved, Shinki made a great mother and Alice lead a cheerful but a bit sheltered and spoiled childhood.
When Alice was about ten years old (and still a human) the events of Mystic Square took place. Makai was attacked by three heroines because they were endorsing tourism to Gensokyo. But still, Alice took the attack as a personal upfront because even at this young age she had a lot of pride for her home. She faced the heroines not once, but twice after stealing a powerful Grimoire from Shinki's library. I believe that being defeated bruised Alice's ego quite a bit and because of this she moved to Gensokyo to study magic and become a stronger magician.
During her time of solitude between Mystic Square and Perfect Cherry Blossom I believe that she decided to devote herself to her magic and cut out any unnecessary activities. This includes socialization and any forms of entertainment. She spent all of her time studying magic and learning about the world around her through reading. I believe this is also around the time that Alice became a youkai through magical means simply so she could live long enough to see her research through. Alice also saw a living doll and was completely taken with it's beauty. She took up doll making in order to create the perfect living doll. Because of her change in priorities the once happy and lively Alice was sucked dry. She became as stoic and unfeeling as the dolls she created in her home.
Alice first appears in Perfect Cherry Blossom as the third boss. She has no significant role in the plot in this game but at this time she is shown as an adult physically instead of a young child. In this game, however, we can see her changes in personality. She became cynical, sarcastic, and aloof. She began to value her independence and solitude much more than before. However, she does show some signs of regrets about her current life style as well. In her official profile for this game it is revealed that even though Youkai do not need to eat or sleep Alice still does all of this. This shows that Alice still wants to hold onto some of her humanity. She is also one of the most friendly youkai towards humans. While she will vocalize slight distain for humans her actions show a different story as she is willing to shelter and house humans that get lost in the forest of magic (where she lives). It's too bad that her time locked away from everyone shows in her social day to day interactions. Alice isn't the most polite of people and she has no sense of hospitality. If you were a guest in Alice's home it's much more likely that she'd ignore you and continue her research instead of trying to engage with you in anyway.
Her doll fascination also evolved and became rather infatuated with them in an unhealthy manner. The woman already spends all day locked away in her house creating them but she also has at least one doll on her person at all times. She makes a large show of having them do things such as cleaning the house or shoveling snow during the winter. Alice will also hold conversations with her dolls as they are the only 'people' she is friendly towards. But, as described in her abilities section, her dolls are not living and Alice must go out of her way to make the dolls do all of these things. Really, if that isn't creepy I have no idea what is. Alice is also rather quirky the main example of this being that she sincerely and truly believes that the less colors you wear on your person the weaker you are. She tells, Reimu, another character, that she is only 2/7ths of her power because her clothing is only adorned by two colors. We still don't know if Alice is right or not and the topic is still debated among fans.
During Imperishable Night and Subterranean Animism Alice teams up with Marisa to help save Gensokyo where another large and important part of Alice's personality comes out. This would be her undeniable snark. Around the black and white which, and arguably around anyone who is immature enough to drag down her behavior, Alice shows that she can dish out a great amount of sarcasm. In fact she seems to have an A Rank in trash talking. The two are unbelievably harsh towards each other, in one part Marisa rather uncharacteristically stutters. Alice's response is literally, straight out of the game, "Why the stuttering? Just yell at her like you always do. 'Bitch, get out of the way!' Like that." While the interactions between them seem hateful it also has an air of playfulness and I would argue that when Alice is with Marisa she's being more true to that child she used to be instead of the harsh facade she puts up for everyone else. With that in mind you could even say that Alice is comfortable around Marisa. Although I still believe that Alice thinks Marisa is a complete idiot and in general doesn't approve of her thieving ways.
Alice is also incredibly prideful and has an ego the size of a large country. While these two things are normally not apparent right away they become much more evident during a danmaku fight. See, the thing is, Alice may love reading and all but she really loves a good throw down just as much. She will take any challenge as her pride won't allow her to back down. While she does dislike losing she is a tactical fighter and uses strategy no matter what. Because of her childhood Alice now holds back and never attacks with her full power because she is afraid of what it would mean if she lost at full power once again. This shows that, despite her pride and love for fighting, she's actually rather cowardly at heart. She's rather insecure deep inside but this rarely shows itself as she usually reverts to her stoic facade before it can.
Have you read up on how the game works?: Communication is achieved via a guide plugin called the Flaming Ferret, and money can be acquired via getting a job, freelance work, or mooching.
1st person sample:
I have read over the guidebook received from front to cover. If I am to believe the explanation believed then beings from another world have completely destroyed Gensokyo and I have no way to get home. This is an inconvenience to say the very least. If I would have known I would have packed for the occasion at the very least...
However, complaining too much is what that black and white witch would do. My research must continue; it knows no bounds and I refuse to let location slow my progress down any more than it already has... I need several things including wood, sewing materials, carving materials, magical grimoires, mercury and arsenic...
It seems like I have a bit of work ahead of me. Perhaps I should start with a check list instead.
3rd person sample:
Alice's jaw dropped at the sight in front of her. She usually never showed this much emotion but the show of sophisticated technology was something that she had never seen before. Growing up in Makai and living in Gensokyo the technology there is outdated and practically non existent, only the Kappa had advanced technology of any sorts...
But even then, the Kappa had nothing like the inside of the S.S. Thor. Named after a Norse god, Alice silently thought to herself that the name was indeed fitting. The inside of the ship resembled a large modernized city which was nothing short of stunning. She could only stand there, feeling small and insignificant, a feeling she had never felt before in her decades of living. It was nothing short of overwhelming. In fact, she almost dropped the guide that she had received.
After taking a few moments she finally gathered herself together. Alice put back on her cold facade and proceeded to explore around a bit. She took in every detail with her intellectual mind, making note of everything she did not understand so she could preform adequate research later on. She'll only stop once she's come across something that is familiar to her.
A Library.
Feeling a bit relieved at seeing something so ordinary and reliable, Alice quickly makes her way inside only to find that this library isn't as she remembered. While there were rows of books which would satisfy Alice's curiosity about her surroundings there were also a row of turrets ready to snipe down anyone who tried to escape without checking out said books. While this was a bit unsettling, Alice decided not to mind it as her greed for knowledge was of the upmost importance. Taking a stack of books she'll find a comfy spot to sit down and read.
