What I Just Finished Reading: Only one book this week, The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. Review below. I actually had four days in a row where I didn't read at all, UGH.

What I'm Reading Right Now: I'm reading an anthology called Down These Strange Streets, billed as 'urban fantasy.' So far it's a LOT of Sam Spade '40s style detectives mixed ( Read more... )

I read Empire of the Vampire last year. I read a really scathing review of it which complained how all the victims were young women who were brutally dispatched, and was quite confused as to whether that person read the same book as me, as a LOT of people die, both men and women (it's a vampire story! The vampires are NASTY). Anyway, overall I liked the story - sure, it's violent, but that was a given considering what the vampires in it are like - and I thought that reviewer sadly missed all the strong female characters in the story. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

I haven't started it yet, but I plan to start it after I finish my current book (which will hopefully be tonight.)

Your comment reminded me of a review I read about American Psycho (which, btw, I regret not DNFing because that thing was awful and traumatizing). Same complaint: that the guy in question murdered women. Well, yes, many of his victims were women because he picked up prostitutes who are sadly disposable in our society, but he also killed several men and a small child! He was an equal opportunity psycho.

When I put a library book on hold, I usually get ebooks. For one reason or another, this time both books were hardcover, which is a little cumbersome when going to various appointments. The Kindle app on my phone is so much more convenient. The first book, Passions in Death by JD Robb was #59 in the "In Death" series. It was good, but she's written better, although she has written worse.

The second book was The Forest of Lost Souls by Dean Koontz, and I liked it a lot. Spoiler alert, or maybe not, but his bad guys always get their comeuppance. If you haven't read this one yet, you might want to give it a try. :-)

In my library we can pick whether we want the ebook version or the physical version. I had myself on hold for both for "Nettle and Bone" and still never got to the top of the list!

I used to read Dean Koontz a billion years ago when I was a teen and stopped because I always guessed his endings. Last year or the year before I picked one up to see if I'd like him any better, but did not. It wasn't the book you read, so maybe you lucked out and got a good one.
