I agree with you on the short story - it's really hard to be concise and still have well-rounded characters and a plot. Also, I've read another book by AR Torre and really enjoyed it, ought to look into this one, too.

Yeah, it's definitely a very specific talent and I think it truly does highlight who's got the goods. :)

I agree! Not exactly the same thing, but Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak books are all about 260-ish pages long, but are still action packed stories with character development and solid plots. I'm always impressed with her books for that reason.

Just looked up the first book and Kate sounds like such an interesting character. Unfortunately my library only starts carrying the series at book 12, so I'll have to check the other libraries that also lend to my city. fingers crossed.

I loved Ushers too. Joe Hill did an amazing job, and it blows my mind just thinking of it!
