If you're honestly only ever gonna use it to a) be called or b) call out for emergencies like taxis, parents etc then pre-paid seems the way to go.
Per-minute it costs more but you know upfront what you've paid for and the call credits usually last 2-3 months I think?
I have telstra prepaid, and even when it runs out of credit people can still call me, so its rather handy. Also means if you can swing it, you could buy an old nokia or something off someone who's turfing one, save some money that way too.
