Unfortunately for the cash-strapped wanting to help, cash seems to be the thing they need most atm. Even if people donate needed goods instead, there's the issue of shipping them there (logistics are always the death of good intentions--we're talking about a region where communication and infrastructure has all but been completely wiped out).
It's very strange, but I felt uneasy and disturbed all of Christmas day, had trouble sleeping during the night, and was thinking to myself, "whenever I feel this way, it usually means something bad is going to happen." Then my mother tells me "something terrible just happened in Asia", I turn on the news...it was eerie and sickening. I'm still in disbelief at the sheer scale of it.
But keep looking--I'm sure organization like schools, businesses, etc, will soon set up drives to help out in some way.
