On Lying

Jun 12, 2008 13:10

I think the problem most people have is that its difficult for them to "embellish" without bullshitting. There's a certain acumen you have to develop for lying. It's not enough to lie, you have to lie in such a way that people can reasonably suspect the story yr telling is both a lie and a truth. If you couch it in a way that makes it seem like you ( Read more... )

I've been thinking a lot about this lately- about how crucial it is to have contemporary mythologies. How they inspire and make life worth living a lot of the time, and how a single story can't possibly fulfill that function.

But I think some people have the gift for them and other people don't. I have a very opposite gift: I have a talent for being almost TOO honest in a way that has effected people positively. That feels refreshing to me as well. Maybe what we need is embellishers and deeply honest folk and for this middle-ground, sucking up, wannabee, wishy wash mentality that envelopes so many people to fade away.

Yeah, I think your right. If you can't be uncomfortably honest you should lie. But not in the "wishy washy" way yr describing. Like don't lie to get out of trouble, lie to get INTO trouble, lie to make the trouble you're in seem worse than it is. Don't lie to make yourself look better, lie to make yourself look worst. That way, when you tell really inspiring, uplifting lies they can have the desired effect. Balance is key.

In my mind, embellishing should not put good people in harms way or gloss over or romanticize harmful things happening to good people. It should not support racism, classism, sexism or oppression.

I mean, the Nazis and our current government crafted a few good urban legends, and look how far those went! I'm sure you could come up with a zillion more examples.

Truth. What I mean is you should lie to seem dangerous, lie to seem rebellious, or (better yet) lie to intensify or magnify those characteristics.

Actually that's not my music. It's my friend Matt's. We used to be in a band called Wet Chapel and now he kept the name with a different band. My band is here:

I apologize for the mix up.
I love your music...I don't know how to describe the emotion/reflection it generates in me. I have not heard anything like it!!!I am very excited about hearing more of your work. Is there a cd I may purchase?

I don't have a myspace account, but I would love to create one and add you. I was reading one of your blogs...about adding artists/musicians/friends. No hard feelings if you wish to decline too.

Are you Matt as well?
