It's definitely not just Firefox. I'm unable to uninstall anything as well. Some programs have just quit working. I'm having problems downloading things as well. I've downloaded 2 programs to try and remove this thing and both times was told that I didn't have permission to access it or it was missing an extension. I'm throwing my hands up at this point. I have Spybot Search and Destroy running and if it works it works. If not, I'm in the process of uploading all my files to ADrive.com and all my bookmarks to delicio.us. I'll just have to use my son's tower (same brand/stats as mine) until taxes come back and I can by a shiny new one.
The one I'm on now is a 3 year old e-Machines with Windows xp and a whole lot of security issues.
Tell your hubby I said thanks. I didn't find anything on it but the local host though. At least I know what to check for next time. :) Hopefully this spybot thing works.
Have you restarted in safe mode and then run the virus software? Or you can download avast which scans before windows boots up. And if all else fails, wait until day after Christmas and see if you can find a cheap thumb drive. I paid $10 for a 4gb over the summer and that was nearly enough to back up my whole laptop.

if it is, then download an old, really old, version of firefox and keep the exe file
uninstall the current one in control panel
reboot
install the firefox and see what happens
