I buy/trade for new manga all the time.
Lately, I have acquired at least 75 new titles.
I thought it would be nice to give a heads up and write some reviews for a couple series I happened to enjoy.
If there seems to be positive feedback or it sparks some interest, I may write more :)
Thanx and enjoy! :)
*LIFE: This series would be a good read for anyone who has ever been bullied or abused in any way. The main character, Ayumu, goes through very difficult times after her best friend attempts suicide. She transfers to a new school and befriends a group of girls who she thinks are her best friends. However, things go sour and they slowly turn on her one by one. They play mind games and bully her to no end.
The best thing about this series is that there happens to be a live action drama based on the manga. I've seen it twice and it is definatey one of my favorites. It drew me in and kept me on edge the whole way through. I must warn; however, that this series deals with attempted suicide, cutting, and sexual abuse. If you liked "Confidential Confessions" then I think you should definately read this series, or at least watch the drama.
*With the Light - Raising an Autistic Child: I have come to deeply love this series. Each volume spans about 500 pages, which is definately worth your money. It actually looks more like an anthology at first glance, but the story revolves around the Azuma family. Their son, Hikaru is diagnosed with Autism, which is relatively uncommon in Japan *according to the book*. Everyone seems to blame Hikaru's mother for his condition at first, which is very saddening. I recommend this to anyone who has autistic children, family members, or friends. It would also be a great read if you are planning on going into teaching as a career. I have learned that there is tremendous diversity inside each and every classroom. Not every student learns the same way. This series is proof of that. Each chapter is filled with valuable information, which may help people better understand autistic children.
Totally Captivated (yaoi/comedy/mahwa): If I could sum up this series in one word, it wold be HILARIOUS! It is a Korean mahwa with a taste of yaoi. It's nothing too explicit, but there are definitely sexual themes present throughout each and every volume. The main character, Ewon, is threatened by the mafia and forced to work for no pay. Mookyul is the gang leader. He is extremely hot-tempered and scares Ewon shitless! XD
The artwork is amazing and there are times when characters are drawn as smaller versions of themselves. However, it isn't your typical "chibi" artwork, it has a bit of a twist which is very interesting to see. Even if yaoi isn't your thing, I think you'd enjoy reading this series solely for comedic value.
Me & My Brothers: I LOVE THIS SERIES! I found it while stumbling around at the bookstore hoping to find something new and interesting to read. I had a few titles that I was debating between and I'm glad I chose this one! The art work is your typical Shojo style, but the brothers in the story happen to be very protective so when they get angry it makes for some hilarious panels XD
I fell in love with Masashi! He is a little on the feminine side and his hobby happens to be cross dressing *just how I like them* He is very flamboyant, and his character alone gives me reason enough to recommend this series to everyone!
Very Very Sweet (manhwa): The cover art immediately drew me into this series. It was an impulsive buy, but I'm extremely satisfied! I've only read the first two volumes, but the storyline is great! It deals with living in a new country and not always understanding your surroundings in an unfamiliar place. The main character, Be-Ri, is incredibly loud and hot-tempered and I found myself laughing out loud while reading a few times! I'm very picky with manhwa titles, but I definitely will be collecting the rest of this series as it becomes available.
High School Debut: Okay, I'm sure that many people who buy Shojo Beat magazine may already know this series, but I love it so much that I just had to write a review! So far I have 7 volumes from this series and I find myself wanting more every single time I read it!
I love the fact that the main character, Haruna, is this baseball-playing tomboy girl who can't seem to do anything right when it comes to the love department. Everything she does while trying to score a guy's attention seems to go wrong. I think a lot of girls can relate to her character, and it proves that sometimes all you have to do is be yourself to catch someone's attention. Oh, and if you like cute, mysterious guys, Yoh is a definite plus! XD
