He's a douche bag. Your job is to save lives not put more in danger including those people you work with. I mean seriously what's his deal? Obviously he's not dealt with too many personal situations regarding people who have had a mental breakdown or emotional distress. I do find it interesting that you guys can't go in until the cops get there. I mean I totally understand though for the exact reasons of the person might be having a gun or knife trying to take you out before they go out themselves. I'm sure someone up in the offices think it's a waste of money but I surely think they should give you guys bullet proof vests. I can't imagine too many people shoot at fire fighters but in situations such as this I can see you guys still feeling a bit safer with them.
All it takes is one time. I know in most people's every day lives they don't contemplate risks like that, but look at all the people on the news that everyday off themselves and three other people that go with them. Look at the Columbine high shooting or terrorists attacks. It might seem far-fetched, but you don't think that terrorists took emergency responders into consideration? They knew that public service workers would storm the twin towers. We just add to the casuality numbers by simply doing our job. NY was no exception, 343 firefighters and numerous cops.
Perfect example though would be within the past 10 years. A firefighter, of all people, called in sick the day he was suppose to work. He attempted suicide, and told 911 that he needed help. When his coworkers got there he started shooting firefighters that he worked with. They were coming to his aid because he was their family and they rushed the scene. Had they staged for PD they'd probably be alive today.
I agree with you - if only that a department needs to follow protocol. If every rank and file went in and made their own decisions, firefighters would be hard to find. He wasn't only putting himself in danger, and you in danger, but he has the potential to put every other person he rides with in danger. He should be written up, in my opinion... And sent to some kind of training.
