So I had an appt on thurs to say I would take the pay cut and hours and on Monday they called and said they had no work for me so I shouldn't bother coming in. I asked for that in writing and got back a letter from ADP which says "my period of leave had expired and I chose not to come back to work", which means I can't get unemployment. But why

Did you ever talk to an attorney about this? Some attorneys will give you a half hour phone consult for free. And if you write to the employer (printed paper copy!) with "cc: Joe Blow, Attorney-at-Law" at the bottom, you may get results without having to go to court. I've had that happen.
