Question: Should you stay friends with someone who continuely betrays your trust, nevers gives a thought to your feelings, only their own, is selfish and self-centered and self-destructive???
These days I try to be forgiving. However, if it is a self destructive relationship.... you have little choice. What Larry says is mostly true. Unfortunatly, you should expect people to be themselves and only have hope that they can change.
Hmmmm. On kind of a different note, how many people do you know that have ever changed for the better? I can think of maybe 1 or 2, but its few and far between. Most people change for the worst it seems as time goes on if they change at all.
I know I personally have had major changes for the better... few and far between. Things like that can only occur in shockwaves. In other words, don't wait for people to change.
I agree on the forgiveness thing, forgiving people is not a bad thing and I tend to forgive people. But I still take what they did into account as part of their character. And its a pretty slow process to redeem yourself from something like that. It takes work to rebuild that trust.
Hold on theres a really bad metaphor here.
Trust is like a plate. It takes a while to make a plate. And instant to drop it. And then it takes a while to glue it all back together. And you can glue it all back together sure but even if you do a meticulous job you can still see the cracks.
No, you should not remain friends with someone who continually brings your spirit down, but you should absolutely sit them down and tell them why you are going to distance yourself. That way they know what they did, and why you are leaving and can attempt to make personal changes. If you dont tell them there is a real level of non-closure that can build up and isnt healthy. I wish you luck!
