Interesting. The author presents no evidence that Arpaio's methods actually reduce the rate of recidivism. On the other hand, the author does provide evidence that Arpaio's methods win votes.
If no evidence exists for a reduction in rates of recidivism then it appears that the people of Maricopa County are voting for Arpaio for the following reasons: 1. An emotional reaction to Arpaio's attitude. They think that Arpaio is taking their side against "the criminals". 2. A presumption that hardship and humiliation will reduce rates of recidivism.
This provides a valuable insight into the prejudices of the voters of Maricopa County. I will bear this in mind if I ever go there. Thanks ;)
I believe the crime rate among certain sections has gone down.. but this is due to criminals simply moving base to another county instead of getting caught and going to the maricopa county jail
however.. the number of inmates that are released and go back to the maricopa jail is really quite small by national standards
