WINTER MOVIE GUIDE

Most people in my age/cool bracket don't care about this, but the Golden Globe awards are tonight which means that in the new few months you will see a maelstrom of self-congratulatory print ads and commercials for the big winners. All the "good" movies are released this time of year so that the people who vote for the fancy-schmancy awards ( Read more... )

Have you read Revolutionary Road? I'm in the middle of reading it right now. It's one of those books that I know I should have read, but never read it until I saw the previews. I would feel guilty for seeing it without reading it because of sheer guilt of procrastination.

I don't know how Yates writing style can be translated into a movie, or more importantly how all the character's internal dialogues play out.

I still won't see it until I read it all.

No, I haven't read it yet and from what I understand the book is much better. I think the trouble is that Yates was writing for his generation, whereas this film is made for one that has not only passed but has spawned another. It's for that reason why I'd never want there to be a Catcher in the Rye movie.

Revolutionary Road is very much worth watching - I saw it days ago and am still thinking about it. I'm just not sure if I really liked it or not.

Is it? I mean, I'm sure it is. I love Gus Van Sant and the supporting cast looks great but the combination of Sean Penn (who I don't like) and the story being one I already know the ending to and that I don't have much of a personal connection with makes me not want to see it.

you kind of forget it's sean penn during the movie (or at least i did). i don't like him either, and for some reason, maybe because his character is so great, I had no problem with him in this film. there was one tiny part of the film i didn't like, but it's not specific to the film, it's just a storytelling technique that I dislike in general.

i loved sean/emile/josh brolin/everyone in it. i also loved man on wire. i am undecided on how i felt after watching synecdoche and happy go lucky.

I plan on seeing Valkyrie even though I know it will suck and make me angry. I think like most Americans, I enjoy hating Tom Cruise. I get why they picked him, their profiles are ridiculously similar...but I feel like there could have been other actors (good ones) that would make up for something so silly as similar appearances.

Once again, the problem with the movie has nothing to do with Tom Cruise; it's that there is no drama whatsoever. At no point in the film can you suspend your disbelief and believe that the good guys are gonna pull through (unlike other dramatized historical dramas like Titanic).

Oh, yeah and there is not one single mention of the jews.
