The uselessness of humanity

Dec 10, 2004 10:30

Now for a Roger-style rant against the stupidity of mankind. Specifically, the common inability to understand phonetic language. While I dont expect them to know the proper words for each letter, they surely can understand them when I say them when I am reading back a postcode to them ( Read more... )

I had exactly the same problem this evening with one of my callers.

O for Oscar?
What? S for Oscar?
No, O for Oscar. O for Open?
A for Open.
No, O for Open. O for On.
I for In?

In the end "orange" prevailed. They should have a retards phonetic alphabet.

p.s. I'm also mildly annoyed by the fact people think I'm saying "N for Nike" instead of "M for Mike".

I have to talk alot on the phone alot for work but because I have the mild speech impediment of sounding retarded its just a constant uphill struggle.

Why do you care though? Why not just get the address wrong, if they don't get the battery they will just phone up and complain and you can just accuse them of lying.

s's and f's sound alike from almost anyone over the phone, so I will clarify with the phontic alphabet. Most people when offered 'is that s for sugar or f for foxtrot?' can manage to tell you the right one (not everyone though). Sugar seems to work a lot better than sierra.

The probalem is that cause of the nice postcode searchy thing, the order comes up looking really suspicious if we dont pick the address from the options the postcode gave us. If they cant give me the postcode to start with then I end up with a dodgy looking order. And I have to type out the entire address in a form that has really messed up formatting, and I suspect has 2 of the fields the wrong way round. Its much easier to let the computer do it.

I have full understanding for people with speech impediments and will happily spend as long as is needed to understand. Too many people just have stupidity impediments however, and theyre annoying.
