well, i hope that it's at least a first step. It is taking them long enough, though. GRrr..
very recently, Damascus, Syria: a Yeshiva was forced to close, for obvious reasons. Well, what ended up happening was that the Rabbi opened his home to the students so that they could continue learning. Someone squealed on him and the goverment came with riot gear. He said the he wasn't moving. They tried to beat him and drag him out of his home and he wouldn't leave. They came the next time around with a bulldozer. He stood in the doorway of his home and yelled out, "You tore down my Yeshivah - if you want to tear down my house, you are going to have to do it over mine and my families dead bodies!" ...they backed down. I don't know what's going on now, but I wish I could get some sort of full report. I didn't think things were that bad still. There were plenty of synagogue burnings, beatings, and jailings over the decades... bleh
