a while ago i posted something that said something like people who aren't naturally clever, who just have the ability to do loads of work/revision, shouldn't do well in exams, or something. then everyone told me off. but it is annoying when people say "oh, so and so is so clever" when she's not, she just works her arse off. hardworking, maybe, but ( Read more... )

yes! fnaaargh. i had this conversation last week & was told twas quite fascist, but how am i, an immensely lazy but potentially rather intelligent person, meant to do well in the world when there are all these annoying, stupid hardworking people around? it's not fair!

I think school grades are entirely related to how much effort you put in, far more than natural ability. I'm not sure how much I even believe in natural ability - I think to a large degree people who seem naturally good at things only do so because they've had practice and have an applyingthemselves sort of personality. Nurture rather than nature. (Incidentally I'm not being arrogant saying this, or bitter... I got BCC for my A-levels, I think I could have got better grades if I'd applied myself more, but could have done much worse too.)
The concept of geekiness boils down to the fact that if you do apply yourself a lot and get good grades, you're not going to have the time to go out as well. The two are mutually exclusive, really, you just have to find the balance. And I don't think you can necessarily say one's better than the other, people that stay in all the time probably haven't lived to the same degree. And living leads to charisma and sparkle, which is just as vital in getting a job/friends etc.

well, i'm not sure about a-levels, but i can tell you that up to a/s that isn't true. because i did no work for my gcse's and got 9A* and one A, and i did marginally more for my a/s levels and got all A's. however, i have the idea that it might not be so for a-levels, so that's why i'm stressing about revision and instead of doing some, i'm taking it out on the people that actually revise. i guess i'm jealous. and really, really lazy.

oh, AND i'm not saying i'm brilliant or even particularly intelligent, i think i just happen to have the right mind for exams. particularly ones that don't involve creative writing.

Ah, well well done to you! I did well in my GCSEs too, but I reckon that people who do revise a lot don't actually revise a lot. They sit at the desk and waste time, or don't revise very effectively. I realise I'm going to be making many enemies who revised their arses off for *decent* marks, but it's not insulting them, more the people who failed to teach them how to revise well.
I definitely think that some people have good heads for exams and others don't, and you have to try to twist your subjects towards ones you can do better. Like I always try to avoid essay subjects, because I hate essays. I don't generally get bad marks for them, I just seriously don't enjoy doing them.
