Just one of the reasons I would never, ever want to birth in a hospital:

Baby's first bath.

For those who don't want to click on it, which I wish I hadn't since I already knew anyway I wouldn't like what happened "behind the scenes" when they whisk the baby away: it's a nurse roughly handling a beautiful pink newborn baby under a running faucet (!) ( Read more... )

Hmm, maybe it's standard at that hospital, but not everywhere. Enoch was gently bathed in shallow container in the room about six feet away from me. I would have rather not had him bathed, of course, and to rub the vernix in, but I haven't hear of anyone locally having their baby treated so roughly. I guess there are a few things they do semi-right around here even in the hospitals. Then again, there was a hospital that was a mere five minutes away rather than ten that we passed by because of how mother and child unfriendly they were in other respects, so maybe it does happen, since I think they still have separate rooms for the various stages there, as opposed to everything in one room at the place I went.

Bea's was even nicer than Enoch's, though, as she got to take her first bath with me. :)
