It was a personal statement that came off particularly puffed up. I just hate it when they are obviously stretching for the "bigger" word, when a regular word would not sound as pretentious. Statement by thesaurus = not good.

Antecedently to my preparation for the SATs I had abnegated my tendency toward volubility; its return supervened with the completion of the exam.
