My "Short" Review on 7x01 of Grey's Anatomy
I'm just going to cut to the main bits of this episode, I'll be cutting this review down by characters/couples (eg, Bailey, MerDer). My thoughts after each scene review in bolditalic.
It's a new season of Grey's Anatomy and I must say that I couldn't wait to see how good the premiere of it was going to be. My review for the episode is below..
Bailey:
At the start of the episode we see Dr. Bailey and toddler Tuck on a jet plane (who appear to be returning from her parents place). A very comfortable Bailey turned to uncomfortable as a lady sitting next to them asks "did you know any of those doctors?" when the shooting happened. The scene then cuts to when Bailey can't answer. I loved Chandra Wilson's performance with Bailey at the start, especially when the lady on the plane asked about the shooting with Bailey I loved Tuck too (I last saw him in Season Five I think (someone can correct me if they want :) ). Then the part when Derek quit being chief, I saw that Bailey was super excited to have Richard back on the job after 6 Seasons of him being chief, it was like the hospital was back to normal :)
Next we see Bailey with Dr Perkins (the trauma counsellor) having her counselling session, Bailey then flashbacked to a scene where her and little Tuck were hopping into a taxi. Ben was seen walking over and trying to explain why he wasn't there for her during the shooting (he had golf). Bailey pretends not to hear him as she and Tuck get into the taxi. Ben asks where Bailey is going, she answers " Home, to my mum....and" just then the taxi driver starts the car, with Ben asking one last thing "Miranda, when are you coming back?", Bailey doesn't answer as the taxi driver drives off and the flashback ends. I loved the way Chandra did this particular scene, you can tell that she wasn't happy with Ben not being there for her and it broke her heart.
After that Bailey walks to find all the residents (Lexie, Alex, Meredith, Cristina, April and Jackson) down in the 'hangout' area (must be the ground floor lol. Meredith: "Dr Bailey.." April: "Welcome back"...Bailey's face is normal so a concerned Alex asks "you okay?" Bailey answers with "I'm happy to see you all" she then gives each of the residents a case in the pit (more than likely) except for Meredith, Cristina (who haven't been cleared for surgery yet) and Lexie. She then gets to Jackson and April, she apologizes to them for the loss of their friends (Charles and Reed), which they thank her for it. My most favourite part of the episode, it was like a family reunion (mainly with Cristina, Alex and Meredith the 3 original interns of Bailey), the song "Undertow" was played and that was nice and beaty :) Also loved how she apologized to Jackson and April regarding (Charlies and Reed), I thought that was quite special :)
Bailey then is seen outside the hospital where Ben walks up to her, he explains again that he was playing golf during the shooting and that he misses her. bailey then puts her hand on his chest and goes on about how Ben is a good , kind and perfect man but she's busy holding herself together with tape & glue. She then gets teary as she explains that she wishes he wasn't playing golf as then he would be where she is (broken). Ben grabs her hands and Bailey then breaks up with him explaining that he is too much for her atm. Ben tells her to "take care now" and kisses her hands, he then walks off for good. This was the saddest break-up Bailey scene ever, the "Tape & Glue" bit got me, Bailey is really taking this whole shooting thing hard and it's very diffcult for her atm.
The last scene is Bailey at Cristina/Owen's wedding, looking stunning then ever.
Richard:
I couldn't wait to see how Richard would be handle for this episode, my question in my head was "will he become Chief again?".
We first see Richard standing near his office (the walkway) overlooking Seattle Grace/Mercy West hospital looking very proud. Then again standing near the stairwell in the reception area, Bailey approaches him, Richard tells her that they all missed her and that she had to be cleared for surgery, Derek then appears up on the stairwell, giving a big speech which turns out to be him stepping down as chief and giving Richard his original job back being Chief. Bailey was very happy for that even cracking up at the fact Derek stepped down from chief. I enjoyed the walkway overlooking scene again, it's like the hospital is whole again which is great :) , the Bailey/Richard interaction was very well done, love the way Richard pointed out that it "wasn't the same without Bailey not being there", it was kinda special.
Richard is then seen dancing to some groovy hip-hop music in his 'old' office, even dusting and moving furniture around. That is until Meredith walks in and sees him haha. Meredith asks him about clearing her for surgery to override Dr Perkins, Richard tells her that he hired the best so she sees the best bascially, when she leaves, he continues what he started: dancing. This was very cute hehe, I bet James enjoyed doing his own little dance routine, the song was very jazzy too which was great :)
Richard was looking for Derek to give good news that he now officially Chief of Surgery once again, he then asks if Derek is sure about this huge surgery he'll be doing with Callie & Mark, he explains about going to two AA meetings. Derek replies that he has the adrenaline, so he's ready. I was very happy to hear that he back as Chief of Surgery, I had a smile on my face :)
We last see Richard at the wedding, looking happily as Cristina and Owen marry.
MerDer (Meredith/Derek):
We first see Derek driving his car at a very high speed across a freeway. Meredith however is talking to Dr. Perkins about change, and going back to work. Perkins mentions Derek being shot, but Meredith is more concerned about Cristina. Perkins mentioned that Derek was shot *flashback back to Derek being shot* Meredith tells Perkins that everyone's fine *flashbacks back to Meredith collapsing in the OR*. Meredith's pager goes off, she looks at it and sighs, Perkins asks if everything is okay, she replies "yeah, everything is just fine". The scene then cuts to a jail cell, where we see Derek checking out a inmate's arm "your lady look's pissed" the inmate tells Derek, Meredith then replies "again Derek?". Hehe, I loved the whole bit of this, Meredith's face was so funny when her pager goes off hehe. Then Derek in the cell, the look he gave Meredith was like a "I'm sorry, forgive me" look.
Derek is talking to Meredith, when April appears with a big surgery she got, Meredith asks if April was cleared "yeah", "BITCH!" Meredith replies. Cristina is seen picking out wedding colors and going on about rice throwing that she hates. Derek then makes a big speech about being back and thanks everyone for the support. But he then steps down as chief as Richard is the much better person to be doing this job.
He then steps down grabbing April with him to look at this big tumor in the brain. Meredith on the other hand is upset now that Derek can't clear her for surgery. I was so glad that Derek stepped down, I like him being the neurosurgern, not chief as well. I think he was rushing into this big surgery but this is all about his current adrenaline. Meredith was brillant with the "bitch" comment towards April haha.
MerDer is with April in the tech lab, looking at this giant tumor on the big touchscreen, where Callie and Mark walk in, Derek wants to remove the tumor by cutting Greg's face in half (including jaw, tongue etc..), Meredith is worried about Greg and how big the tumor is, Derek brushes it off. Derek reckons he will be cleared for surgery, Meredith isn't so sure. Again, I think Derek is rushing and I totally agree with Meredith wanting him to realize the pain the kid will be in.
Owen and Derek are walking through the hospital talking about regrets, when all of the sudden Owen asks Derek to be his best man, Derek agrees and asks about a bachelor party, Owen tells him no and Derek was pleased. Enjoyed Owen and Derek together, was happy that Derek is the best man for the wedding.
MerDer are with the Greg d and his mom, the mom is very worried about them slicing his face in half, Derek is understandable and wants to help, the Greg's mom agrees. Meredith then tells the mom that he might not wake up, he could go blind, cant eat, sleep and could go into care. He might not even survive on the table. Meredith walks out telling Derek "your driving is awfully bad Dr Shepherd, least you can do is wear a seatbelt". Perfect quote from Meredith, about Derek's rushing, he needed to be told.
Meredith is seen with her resident buddies, but is busted by Bailey and is ushered to the clinic. Meanwhile, Derek has his talk with Perkins, and they are talking about him stepping down, and about the shooting. Life is short. Perkins asked about it being clarfifying, Derek simply replies "Alot of people died". *Flashback to Derek laying in bed with a upset April apologizing, Derek tells her that Clark was looking for him and that he caused Clark to shoot those people*, Derek is then seen driving awfully fast with a clearance form in the front passenger seat. Meredith walks in on Perkins and Teddy making out, Meredith demands a new counsellor but Perkins tells her that Teddy was cleared way before he got there. Meredith goes on about everyone being cleared for surgery but they are still unstabled (Lexie, Alex etc..). *Flashback to a hospital where Meredith and Cristina are there, Meredith asks about Derek and Owen, she tells Cristina to tell Owen and April about what is going on with her. Crisitna then leaves, a nurse comes in and starts to tell her about her foetus* I got to see the real MerDer after the shooting and it was great, Derek seems to have the adrenaline to do big surgeries whilst Meredith is set back due to the Miscarriage.
Derek is with Richard talking about his adrenaline, Derek is then performing the surgery with Callie, Mark & April, dissecting the tumor out of his brain, whilst Derek is operating, Meredith is too busy pushing Cristina out of the OR gallery as she is worried about her. She tells Cristina that they're not better, she thinks Perkins has gave her several opportunites to deem her unfit to operate. Meredith tells Cristina is not better and is worried about her being married after the shooting, she tells Cristina that she gets to be worried as Cristina is her soulmate. They get into a word fight about them not telling their partners especially Meredith with her miscarriage to Derek. Loved how Meredith told Cristina that they are soulmates, that was very cute hehe.
MerDer are making out in the Call-Out room, when Meredith goes on about him with the surgery how great he was, that is until Derek takes his shirt off and tells Meredith "let's make a baby, let's just pull the go with and do it". But his pager goes off and it's Greg, he runs off. Derek runs to find Greg, in so much pain that April can't even control it, Derek then puts both hands on Greg's shoulder and tells him that this is the fight, the pain is going to stop, they will help you, Greg can stop the pain because he is in the driver's seat. He then comforts the mom and tells her that she won that he won..Derek then is driving his car (on his way to the wedding) until the cops catch him this time, Derek is then in a jail cell, Meredith approaches him. Derek then gets up and tells her that he went to get ice and that they'll make the wedding. Meredith cheekly tells him she will make the wedding (whilst taking the rings out of Derek's pocket), she just wanted to see Derek alive for herself she puts on her angry face and storms out. Derek is left in jail overnight. I just love Meredith dealing with Derek, leaving him in jail overnight was the best idea ever. Hopefully it will teach Derek a lesson or two ;)
Meredith arrives at the wedding, she passes the rings to Owen, who asks for Derek. Owen asks if Cristina is coming down the stairs. Meredith heads on up to check on her. When Cristina asks how Owen is, Meredith replies "He's perfect", Cristina tells her "Thank you".
Meredith is last seen handing Cristina the rings with a giant grin on her face. Meredith looked gorgeous during the wedding. I loved how the post-it note is stuck above MerDer's bed as well, very special :)
That's part I done on the review, I'll write up the rest tomorrow night hopefully :)
