Since moving to Earth, Gaila has become more expressive than she had been previously, though some human concepts (such as celibacy and love) escape her. She enjoys a casual attitude toward sex (“sex as a handshake,” some say), and feels attraction to both men and women. Her relationships form most easily with women, as she’s still incapable of treating the majority of men as equals without deliberate effort, and does have slip-ups on occasion. Though upon first glance she may seem a bit flighty, she is very committed to her decisions and dedicated to her career in Starfleet, achieving excellent marks thanks to her genuine interest in her subjects. She considers herself a realist first and an optimist second; however, her temper is quick to flare, and she feels no need to guard her emotions from those she doesn’t consider threats. She speaks a basic variety of Federation languages, as well as various Orion dialects (High Orion, Low Orion, Trader’s Tongue, et cetera), but her native tongue is Orion

[ Comments ]: An interview with Roberto Orci infers she is an escaped slavegirl; however, given that information on Orion society is only slightly less limited than information on Gaila herself, interpretations of her background are varied and open. I’ve given you mine, based on canon elements (Enterprise, prominently), as well as published noncanon elements, and personal deductions drawn from the two. An ever expanding rundown of my personal Orion canon can be found here.

Being a medical practitioner on a ship was one thing, but being down here, planet side and in the nitty gritty of a conflict was entirely another. [ Character Background/DescriptionLily decided when she was fourteen that she wanted to be a doctor in Starfleet. Her parents weren't too impressed by her precocious decision (relayed in a letter, of course, as their youngest daughter was away at a boarding school for the especially gifted), since the month before Lily had been convinced she wanted to work with the underprivileged in southern Africa and, before that, had set her heart on saving stray cats in Peru. But this decision? It stuck. Maybe it was because the boy Lily was a little in love with had decided that same week to be a pilot for Starfleet, but mostly it was the influence of her classes, real thinking, and intense research into just what that would take

Get down to the gym and actually run two miles like I've been trying to for the past week; bug Len about joining me as it'll be good for his heart.
Read through report on Andorian pediatrics.
Beta shift.
Don't think about what day it is today.
It's funny that I think I can actually get through today without thinking about it. I wonder how long it'll have to be before I can just forget about it, go by the whole week without realizing that it was supposed to be my wedding anniversary. I'm glad I'm not married, after all. It would have been much more difficult than either of us realized. What if we had been assigned to different ships? Especially considering the Narada incident, I most likely would have lost him then anyway. I wonder if we would have distracted each other through Academy. If I would have done as well as I did if he had been there, poking me and asking me questions and ... I wonder if we would've lasted

Pavel’s mother was not thrilled about the idea of her only child joining Starfleet. Fourteen year old Pavel however, insisted that it was the best idea he ever had. Because everything would be different in Starfleet. He would be in classes that actually challenged him, with peers he could connect with intellectually. He badgered his mother about this for the next year, learning English and insisting that he was old enough to live alone, because didn’t she always say he was mature for his age?
She finally relented soon after he was fifteen, and he was quickly admitted to Starfleet after meeting with recruiters in the relatively small Russian base and being declared a child prodigy. He spent a small stint in the Russian academy before he was declared mature enough to be transferred to the significantly larger academy in San Francisco...
Pavel quickly learned that he was no better suited to make friends here then he was back home. While he could not relate to children his own age, cadets in Starfleet proved to barely tolerate him. After a magnificent failure trying to connect with his fellow cadets (turns out a fifteen year old offering to tutor someone in Stellar Cartography is often seen as not only an insult to their intelligence, but also their manhood) he became a bit of a social hermit, staying in his dorm and studying. While this was rather detrimental to Pavel’s social skills, it did however allow him to reach graduation in record time of only two and a half years.
Despite his lack of social camaraderie, Pavel remains optimistic with a blindingly sunny disposition and a passion for all things mathematical. During his off shifts, Pavel can be found in Engineering, doing other people’s jobs for recreation.

[ Journal Entry Sample ]: Dear diary--
No, that sounds so silly. So. Let's try again.
Yeoman Janice Rand's log; entry one.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly why I of all people need to start keeping a log, but I'm just going to roll with it and see how it goes. Um. I'm up early today because I'm supposed to be a part of the landing party for today's mission, and to be perfectly honest I'm pretty nervous. It's not the first time I'm going out, but the planet has been known to be a little hostile towards Starfleet officers, despite them being a member of the Federation. I guess they think we're only going to be there to boss them around, even if it's nothing like that. Either way, despite my nervousness for the planet itself, I am happy to be getting off of the ship for a while.
Now that I'm up though, I'm wondering what I'm going to do with my extra time. There's always work to be done but--
OH, oh duh, I need to wake the Captain! I knew there was a reason I gave myself an extra--!
