That is very helpful about the Clipper card, thank you! I think I am worrying too much and missing the obvious things, haha.

I hadn't considered a ferry! That does sound pretty fun, I will have to hit it up on Saturday.
And haha, I have stayed in hostels in Europe, so I think I will survive the sheets. Anything to save some money! ;)

Thanks for the tips!

Get a transportation map from SF Muni (the website tells you where you can pick one up, and the hostel people will know too) so you can find your way around. It's pretty safe walking around at night in a lot of the city, including Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf, and the areas in between, if you use your head and don't swing your money around on a string as you walk. But the bus is also easy and cheap. The SF Muni transportation system includes buses, streetcars and cable cars and is pretty comprehensive and easy to use. All you need is that SF Muni map and maybe a single- or multi-day pass (see details on the SF Muni website) depending on how long you'll be here.

Veg-friendly restaurants: I'm a big fan of Golden Era which is about 5 blocks from Union Square. Their carmelized fake chicken is amazing! Also, I second using Yelp.

Have fun!

That does sound helpful, thank you! I live by Las Vegas and am pretty good at figuring where not to walk at night, so hopefully common sense will get me by in SF. Just wanted to make sure the areas don't have a particularly bad rep! ;)
And I will have to start checking out yelp more, thank you!

There are HILLS (and I do not use the emphasis lightly) between Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square. You may not want to climb them after a full day siteseeing and then sitting down and stiffening up at a concert.

when I lived in SF I found it easiest to take the trolley up those hills and walk everywhere else. plus the muni for everywhere that was too far to walk to.

oh thanks, that sounds like a good idea! I prefer walking so I can do more sightseeing and not miss any cool stuff, but skipping the hills sounds ideal...

I live near Fisherman's Wharf and I recommend that you take the F-Street Car from Market and 4th to the wharf. I've taken it late at night and have never had an issue.

Thanks, good to know!! I think I'm just gonna map out some of the exact routes now so I stop worrying. ;)
