Moving

Hello, my name is Aurora. I'll be moving to SF from Miami the first week or so of October. I'll be driving this long distance with my boyfriend and my cat. We are looking for apartments and such on craigslist, however we are not so familiar with the area. We'd like to live closer to the city. Does anyone know of good areas? Without knowing (a) your budget, and (b) your needs in terms of a home (although we can assume that you need somewhere pet-friendly, that only scratches the surface), (c) what you mean by "a good area", and (d) what "closer to the city" means to you, your question is impossible to answer. A final question of "where are you going to be spending your time (such as work) will help answer the question, as will your willingness/desire to use public transit to get around.

The San Francisco Bay Area covers 9 counties and 7.1 million people, so saying "what's a good area" is highly dependent on many factors, none of which you've listed here.

Yes, more information is definitely needed, especially price range and where you'd be commuting to.

Also, be prepared--finding housing in the Bay area can be kind of torturous.

Don't write off the East Bay until you look at it. Depending on where you work, a BART ride from there might not be bad, and it's a good place to live in many ways.

I live close to the Oakland Rockridge BART, and it's actually faster for me to get to downtown SF than it is for people who actually live in some parts of the city!

When you say "closer to the city", the first question that comes to mind for me, is which city. I'd give it about a 60% chance of being San Francisco, a 40% chance of San Jose, and a few other % for other odds and sods like Berkeley. (Doesn't add up to 100%, I know ;-)).

Rereading, I say you said "moving to SF" not "moving to the Bay area". Never mind.

I'd like to spend 1100 monthly on rent, and I wouldn't really mind living with roommates as long as they were accepting of my cat, and we are two people. I do have a car, but I wouldn't mind spending less on gas and some on public transit. I would like to live somewhere walkable, close to restaurants and bars. I work as a veterinary receptionist now but I'm pretty flexible in that regard.
