Okay, so. Admittedly with a bit of reluctance, I have finally made the leap to AO3 ( Read more... )

Depends what specific problems you're having with it. My only real problem with it of late has been that it will sometimes take two or three goes to upload a fic for some reason. I do like it though. Love reading on it. Love that I can choose to read in chapters or the whole fic and that I can download to read on my Kindle or laptop. The search thing is a bit of a headache still but I'm learning to cope with it.

No problems yet. I just confirmed my account. This is the deep breath before the plunge. :)

And yes, the ability to easily create e-books to read on my Kindle is my hands-down fav thing about AO3!

Well done! Plunge in. I'll look forward to bookmarking your page once it's up and running properly.

Decide whether or not to back-date to match original posting dates? Figure out what kind of tagging conventions you want to use, so you can be consistent with it? And determine whether you want to link certain groups of fic up in series format for readers to subscribe to or bookmark as a chunk? Because people get as judgy about those kinds of things as they do a lack of summary. :)

*also looking forward to being able to subscribe on AO3*

I've already decided against backdating, but I do plan to include the original posting date in the end notes.

The ability to link stories via series is one of the nicest aspects of AO3, I think. Only second to easy downloading of fic for my Kindle! :)

Thanks for the advice re consistency; I agree, it's important.

I've been posting to AO3 and LJ for a while. The ability to make things a series on AO3 is great, without having to go hunting for your old fic URLs. And tag consistency is helpful - personally I think some people go a little overboard with their tags, but your mileage may vary.

YES YES YES to the series thing. It's one of the best aspects of the archive.

And heh, yes, your tags shouldn't be longer than your actual fic...

for what it's worth, the one thing i really really hate that i've seen some authors do lately is the '1 million and 1 tags' block. I understand that a bunch of drabbles or ficlets may be easier to post together, but if you have to do that, try to group the fandoms or themes somehow so you don't end up with every single possible tag in the world.

and for ghu's sake, please don't tag with things like 'why did i do this i don't even know'. I know that can be fun, but it's also pretty useless clutter.

Oh, ha, yes, completely agree! I think it's a tumblr mentality that doesn't really belong in a fic archive. Then again, I've never visited tumblr, so that's more via osmosis.
