"Damn it, Maybourne!"
"Yes, Jack?"
"Maybourne, open this damn door!"
The warning in Jack's voice was enough to make Harry Maybourne peer out of his locked door and see his old sometimes friend, sometime enemy standing impatiently at the door. He sighed. It was interesting to keep the ever-so respectable Jack O'Neill, Special Investigator, waiting and the irritation factor was always fun, but he'd better see what had Jack so bent out of shape.
He opened the inner door, leaving the screen door locked as he looked out, leaning against his doorframe. He could see now that Jack looked very agitated.
"What do you want, Jack?"
"I have a case and I ... "
"What?"
The other man flashed a grimace and looked as if he would spit, then spoke slowly and grudgingly.
"I need your help with a case."
Maybourne laughed and opened the door, showing Jack inside, glancing around by habit, his eyes scanning the area. As he shut the door, his mind raced, thinking about contacts and resources he might need. As much as he enjoyed kidding and annoying Jack, he loved a good mystery as anyone else and he enjoyed the times he and Jack had worked together.
Ever since Jack became an up and up special investigator with the Colorado Springs Police Department, he had not called on Maybourne as often. The man tried to forget that he had started out on these same streets that Harry walked now.
Harry sat down in his easy chair next to the TV and waved a hand at the other man. jack grimaced in distaste at the room. It was extremely orderly but Jack was uncomfortable coming here, and Harry knew it, which meant this case was something big and important. It also meant that Jack really did need his help, or else he would have fielded this as a phone call, or worse set that worm Jackson to deliver the request. Harry would end up helping him, but it didn't hurt making Jack sweat a little.
"So to what do i owe this visit to my humble abode."
Jack snorted and looked around and Harry grinned. Though hidden amongst the fashions of a normal house, Harry's house was state of the art with all the latest equipment. Despite it having been a long time since they both did 'Government work', he still had some connections.
"I have a case I thought you might be useful on and ... "
Jack seemed to stumble on it, then went on.
"Look, Maybourne. I am not happier about recruiting you than you are, but you are useful and good at what you do, and I need someone outside the system right now. Someone is working things so I cant figure out the shape of what I am dealing with, but what I have been able to discover, it doesn't feel right. I need your sneakiness to figure out what's really going on here."
"Well, well. Isn't that a peach? You need me. And what's in it for me?"
Jack flashed a grin and turned, pulled a package out of his jacket and tossed it over to Harry. Harry raised an eyebrow and opened the small package to find season tickets to baseball, in the luxury box with snacks and drinks included. Harry's eyebrows went up even further. This must have cost jack a lot. Which added even more urgency to it.
"This is a rich price, Jack. Okay, you got my attention. You got the information together on the case?"
Jack tossed him a thick manilla envelope with a video tape taped onto the outside.
"There is everything I have managed to find out legally. Something is keeping every other piece of information hidden." Jack paused and seemed about to say more but reconsidered it, and turned to leave. Harry followed, slapping the envelope against his palm. This sounded like it just might be very, very interesting.
As the man drove off, Harry locked the doors and went back inside to get to work.
