I represent an insurer so i know about such incidents as well. Many of such accidents are staged, unfortunately.
There are cases whereby car A was hit on the back by car B and B took off! Very quickly a tow truck came along and start to solicit business from Car A - saying they will help file claims and do repairs etc. (The only 'free tow service' that i know of, is from EMAS. I am sure you would have seen them on the expressway sometimes.)
Some of these people actually are those who inflate the claims on repairs and in turn, the premium for car insurance increase and consumers have to bear the cost for something they didnt do.
What you did is right - getting Tan Chong to come into the picture. The key is to always get your authorised workshop to handle the claims and repairs. :) Hope everything gets resolved quickly for you!
Thank you for replying. The sickening thing is, I was just driving straight when this lorry suddenly crashed in from the side and I had absolutely no time to react. When I went to file an accident report at Tan Chong, they simply told me to claim from my own insurer because the process of getting repairs done etc is faster. My question is, wouldn't that mean that I was at fault?
I wasn't! And I thought they would have advised me to claim the other party's insurance!
I'm insured with AIG. However, the other party involved refused to tell me his insurer, maybe because he was driving a company lorry. I only managed to get his IC no. and his company's contact details.
Given that this is the case, how will my insurer know which insurer to contact?
I'm sorry to keep asking questions, because I really don't know what the procedure is going to be like and I feel insecure knowing there are scums out there who would stoop to everything just to earn some quick bucks.
No worries about questions, i will try to answer them to my best knowledge.
Its quite common that they do not want to part with their details but i hope you did get his genuine company details. Most importantly, the vehicle registration no. must be accurate Did you get his phone no. as well? Normally, i ask my clients to get the other party to call them on the phone on the spot, so as to register the other party's phone numbers. If you have witnesses to the accident, that will help heaps too.
As long as you have lodged your case with AIG, you just let them fight the case for you. If you want to be sure, just call the other party's company up to confirm on the details given. AIG's claims has always been quite fast. I trust that you got your courtesy car as well. Let the workshop do their job and get the car back soon. Assuming all the details that you have collected are true, facilitating of the case will be done by the insurers :)
Thank you... As my accident happened last Friday and my husband was not in town (he is the rightful named owner), I can only complete my accident report tomorrow as he just got back.
Will discuss our case and see what to do next. Really keeping fingers and toes crossed. Appreciate your time and advice :)
