It had been two weeks since Atlantis had made its unexpected arrival on Earth. Major Evan Lorne was standing on a balcony looking out across San Fransisco Bay to the Golden Gate Bridge. He was aware of the air of excitement in the city about the fact they were back on earth. The thought of being able to see family members or to catch up on old times with good friends had everyone buzzing. Evan felt that he should feel the same, but somehow he couldn't manage it. He didn't want to go anywhere. Not yet! There was still something he wanted to do. However, the more he thought about it, the more he he thought he was running out of time.

He knew the IOA was having meetings with Mr Woolsey, Colonel Sheppard, department heads and representatives of the SGC. He had no doubt that they were dealing with the future of Atlantis. Because they were on Earth he was sure that they were going to see that there wasn't a need for a full compliment of military personnel. Evan had a nasty feeling that would lead to his redeployment.

Sighing , Evan turned away from the view and made his way through the city. As he came across people he smiled, even though he didn't feel that happy inside. Eventually he found his way back to his quarters. When he wasn't on duty patrolling the city he found himself spending more and more time there. Evan felt happy because he could indulge in his hobby. He was an artist and he loved to paint. He'd managed to do a few canvases while he'd been in Atlantis. While he was willing to show most of them to anyone, there was one that he wouldn't show anyone. Especially not the person whose portrait was on the canvas. Lifting the cloth that covered it he gazed at his portrait of Radek Zelenka. He was the reason Evan wasn't happy about the thought of leaving Atlantis.

His friendship with Radek came about because of their shared thorn in the side otherwise known as Dr Rodney McKay. Both he and Radek had run ins with the man, (Radek even more so as he worked with the man on a regular basis!)

One day when Evan was heading towards the mess Radek came towards him and bashed in to him. He was muttering something in Czech.

"Whoa there Radek. Are you okay?"

Radek turned towards him. "I'm sorry Major. Rodney had gone to far!"

Evan couldn't help smiling. "I was heading to the mess for lunch. Care to join me?"

Radek nodded. They spent their lunch talking about Rodney and how irritating he could be. Radek told him what Rodney had done that day to annoy him.. Evan shared one of the times he'd been on Sheppard's team. They ended up laughing. Due to Rodney being a pain these meetings became a regular event.

However, as time went on things began to change. The two men shared stories of their childhoods, their hopes and fears and the things they missed most about Earth. They began to spend more and more time together. As they did, Evan began to look at Radek in a different way. There was something about the way he would sometimes use his hands while he talked, especially when he was annoyed. He had lovely blue eyes that were framed by his glasses. His hair, although never that tidy, always looked soft. Evan often found himself wondering what is would be like to run his fingers through it.

This totally confused Evan as he had never entertained any romantic thoughts for any man and especially not for Radek, At least not until then. It was at this point that he decided to do the painting. Of course it had to be from memory. The way Radek's image was imprinted in his mind meant that this would be no problem at all.

He also decided that he wanted to see if he had any chance with Radek. However any thought of that was put on hold after the Wraith caused trouble and decided to head to Earth. Now that Atlantis was back on Earth he wasn't sure what he should do. It didn't help that Radek was really busy checking the damage that had been done during the battle and Atlantis's re-entry and landing on the planet.

Radek was busy checking the power in the ZPM's. While there certainly wasn't enough power to get the city off then planet, at the moment there was enough power to run the shield and power the city. However, he knew that the longer they needed to stay on Earth , it would be harder to keep things going which was why he was also investigating the possibility of getting some Naquada generators as a back up.

Additionally he was also leading teams to assess and fix the damage that had been done to the city and the teams equipment. Although it annoyed him that he'd been left to sort out all the problems throughout the city and had no doubt Rodney was taking credit for the use of the wormhole drive, he was still glad that he didn't have to deal with The Powers That Be. He'd had enough of that sort of thing before he'd made it on to the mission in the first place.

Radek was also feeling rather down because he wasn't getting to spend much time with Evan. He'd come to really enjoy his time with the Major. There was something about the man that he found made him uncertain. He wasn't at all sure what he'd expected from his friendship with the Major, but he hadn't expected that he would eventually end up getting close to him. Evan had even insisted that he call him by his first name.. Evan had lovely blue eyes and his face lit up when he smiled. There was also something very sexy about the man. (In-fact, if Radek was honest, Evan had featured prominently in some of his favourite fantasies as he pleasured himself!) Of course it was wishful thinking that Evan might have any feeling for him, let alone that he might do anything about it.

Later that day Radek sighed as he replaced the panel fixing yet another set of circuits. It seemed for each problem he solved, another one came along. It seemed never ending. Stopping for a moment he took his pad and looked where he where he had to go. He was heading towards the chair room.

As the duty officer Evan was sitting in the gate room looking at the screens. Everything was okay, as it had been since they had arrived on Earth. While he was certain that nothing was going happen, there was a part of him that was just waiting for something to go wrong,

"Ever the eternal optimist!" he thought to himself and shaking his head.

Suddenly his radio crackled in to life. "This is Dr Zelenka to Major Lorne. We're heading to the chair room."

"Understood." Evan thought for a moment. "Hey Radek, when you're done would you like to join me in the mess? My stomach is telling me it wants to be fed and I would love the company."

Radek grinned and shook his head. "Of course. I'm sure that the rest of my team would appreciate a rest from all the repairs. I just need to do ….."

There was a strange noise and then a thud. The radio went dead.

"Major Lorne to Dr Zelenk. Dr Zelenka come in please." Still nothing.

Evan began to panic. This shouldn't be happening and especially not to Radek. It wasn't fair. For them both the have survived the trip to earth to have Radek get hurt now, like this, it wasn't fair.

Carson was sitting at the desk in the infirmary looking over some medical files.. As Jennifer was away at the meetings she's asked him to take over as CMO. It felt very odd being here. It was somewhere he knew very well and yet it all felt so odd. He knew that he shouldn't be here and yet here he was. Not only had they trusted him to launch the drones they were now trusting him to keep everyone alive and well.

Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted. "Dr Beckett this is Major Lorne. Something has happened to Dr Zelenka's team. I've lost contact with them."

Carson grabbed his emergency medical kit and looked around him. " We have an emergency situation. I want you two with me and the rest of you, I want the infirmary prepared for incoming wounded

Evan called the infirmary again. "Dr Beckett please wait there. I'll send a team to go with you. As we have no idea what happened I don't want you to go there alone."

Evan made the call to the current patrol and told them where to go. He then sent them to the infirmary to pick up Dr Becket and his team, Then he sat back and waited. This was the hardest part of the whole thing. Slowly he got up and began to pace the gate room.

"This is Dr Beckett. Would you please come to the infirmary."

When Evan arrived in the infirmary it was a hive of activity. Members of Radek's team were being treated. Some had cuts a bruises and others looked like they were in a state of shock. Evan looked for Radek but couldn't find him. Suddenly he became aware of someone standing beside him. It was Carson.

"Where's Radek?"

Carson looked at him, concern in his eyes. "Follow me Major."

He led Evan towards a bed at the back of the infirmary. Laying in it was a figure that he knew only too well.

"Radek!" Evan said quietly.

As Evan was so used to seeing Radek moving and animated, it was hard to see him laying so quiet and still. His eyes were closed and the only way to tell he was alive was the rise and fall of his chest.

Evan looked at Carson. "What happened?"

"From what I've been told, as they were heading to the chair room, Radek brushed against a wall. It seems that this triggered some sort of reaction that led to a small explosion. While it wasn't enough to kill anyone, it did throw Radek back against the opposite wall with some force. Radek has been scanned and while he has no broken bones or internal injuries, it appears he has suffered head trauma due to the force of the impact. Until he wakes up we'll have no indication as to whether he's suffered any permanent brain damage. It's a case of waiting I'm afraid. It doesn't matter how long it takes, Radek will get the best care there is. I'll make sure of it."

Evan stood silent and still. Right at that moment he didn't know what to do. His whole world had been turned on its head. He'd become so used to having Radek in his life that he couldn't imagine him not being there and it was too much for him. Suddenly he was overcome by a feeling of regret and a pain that went through him and deep into his heart and soul. Then he felt a wetness rolling down his cheek. Running a finger over it he realised that he was crying.

Carson looked at Evan. He knew Evan and Radek were friends as he'd seen them together a lot and now that he'd seen Evan's reaction to what had happened to Radek he was left wondering if there was something more going on between them.

Carson placed a hand on Evan's shoulder. "Are you okay? You know you can talk to me. Anything you say to me won't go any further."

Evan dried his eyes and thought for a moment. He had so much he wanted to say but the person he needed to say it to was laying on the bed in front of him. "Thanks for the offer Docc but it's all right. Would it be okay if I visited Radek?"

Carson smiled. "Of course. It's said that hearing a familiar voice can help bring people round so you being here would be a good idea."

Over the next few days, when Evan wasn't on patrol, eating or sleeping, he could be found sitting at Radek's bedside telling him about the day that he'd had and things that he'd heard about the meetings that were going on onshore. He also found himself telling Radek even more about his childhood and his hopes and fears for the future. But no matter how long he chatted Radek didn't move. Evan wasn't Even sure that Radek could hear him. While in his heart Evan knew he would never give up on Radek, it was frustrating not knowing if it was working.

On the fifth day Radek began to come to. He could hear a familiar voice. He recognised it as Evans. As he lay there, he round himself listening to what Evan was saying.

Evan looked around to see if there was anyone there. When he was sure they were alone he leant in close to Radek's ear and began to talk. "There's something I have to tell you. When I became friends with you, I never expected this to happen. I wasn't looking for it and until I met you I hadn't even considered being involved with another man. It's just that there is something about you that we can share a laugh. When I'm with you it's easy to forget all my troubles no matter how hard my day has been. I … I think I've fallen in love with you and it's been hard because I've felt like this for a while now. I wanted to tell you but I didn't know how. Hell I didn't even know if you like guys or not." Evan sighed. "Eventually when I did pluck up the courage all the stuff with the Wraith heading to Earth happened so I still didn't get to tell you. I'm not sure if you feel the same way, but I hope you do, but even if you don't I still want you in my life. So come back to me please."

Radek couldn't help smiling at this. He'd hoped that Evan might have felt that way but he'd always assumed that because he was part of the American military. Evan either wouldn't be that way or even if he was, he couldn't be open about it. The fact that Radek now knew made his heart sing. Up until now he'd never been lucky in love, which had made it so easy to say yes to going on the Atlantis mission. Of course he had his family but that wasn't the same as having someone to come home to who loved and cared about you. Opening his eyes he turned his head towards Evan. Evan looked down at him, a warm smile of relief on his face.

"Come a little closer Evan." Radek whispered. Evan leaned his head down a little further and was surprised as Radek pressed his lips gently against his cheek. " I hope that answered your question but just in case it didn't I will tell you how I feel. I heard every word you' ve said and I found it very enlightening and it pleased me a lot too. This is because I feel the same way about you. I dream about you you know." Evan looked at him and blushed a little which made Radek smile. " If you want a relationship with me, I would love to be … your partner."

Evan looked at him fondly. Given the fact that he knew for certain that John Sheppard was in a relationship with Rodney McKay he was sure that it would be okay.. It wasn't as if they were going to shout it out too loud, at least not at the moment anyway. No matter what happened he thought that it would be worth trying for. The worst that could happen was that it all fell apart but it could just be the start of the best thing that had ever happened to him. After another quick look around he leaned and and gave Radek a deep and passionate kiss. Radek responded with a heavy sigh as he kissed him back.

Carson had been going to get a blood pressure reading from Radek when he'd noticed the two men kissing. He'd been right, there was something more going on between them and he was happy for them. So he decided that the blood pressure reading could wait and he turned and walked away, leaving them alone.

Two days later. Carson had decided that it was safe for Radek to leave the infirmary as long as he worked light shifts. He also gave Evan the task of looking after Radek and making sure Radek came straight to Carson if there were any problems.

Radek grinned at Evan and than turned towards Carson, "Thank you and it's no disrespect to you but I'm really glad to get out of here."

Carson laughed and said, "Go on with you. Get out of here and take the Major with you."

The two men walked out of the infirmary and headed off to their day. After a few hours when Evan had helped Radek catch up with the rest of his team and watching as he found out what still needed to be done, Evan decided to take Radek to the mess hall for a meal. He didn't want him to push himself too far and besides it would be nice to be alone with Radek in somewhere that wasn't the infirmary. After the meal he asked Radek if he would come back to his room as there was something he wanted to show him. Radek smiled and said that he would love to.

Radek walked in and looked at the paintings that were stood up against the wall. Radek couldn't help noticing the one that was standing away from the wall, on its own, covered with a cloth.

Evan nodded at him, saying, "Please take a look. I want you to see it."

Radek lifted the cloth and placed it over the back of the painting. He was surprised when he saw his own face staring back at him. While he was in no doubt that is was his face, there was something about it that he wasn't sure he recognised. His eyes were bright and the smile that was there softened his face and there was a peaceful look to his expression. Turning to Evan he had a puzzled look on his face.

Evan walked up to Radek and put his arms around his waist, holding him close. "I did that from memory and that's how I see you. You are everything that's in that picture and more."

Radek turned in Evan's arms and looked at him, putting his lips on to Evan's slowly and gently, his tongue gently licking at Evan's asking for entry. Evan opened his lips gently allowing Radek's tongue to enter his mouth. Radek let his tongue roam around Evan's mouth, licking, tasting and mapping its inside. As they kissed Evan managed to manoeuvre them over to the bed pushing Radek against it. Taking the hint Radek stopped kissing long enough to look at Evan, who in turn reached over and began to undress Radek. Radek began to do the same to him. Soon they were both naked. Evan took Radek's hand in his and pulled back the cover of his bad and smiled.

"I know it's not that big but I'm sure that we can find a way to fit in to it …. that's if you want to ..." Evan hesitated as he looked at Radek.

Radek ran his hands over Evan's naked skin and down to his bottom. The feeling of his skin was warm to his touch "Why wouldn't I want to? I've waited for this moment for so long. I'm still not sure that I won't wake up and find that this is is all dream."

The two men lay together and began to explore each other's bodies, touching skin, and stroking and holding each others cocks. They revelled in the feeling as they brought each other close to release, moans of pleasure coming from their lips. As they got closer to orgasm Radek took hold of Evan's cock and held it in his hand along side his own. With a quickening pace he brought them both to a noisy release that left them both breathless and elated. Reaching down on to the floor Evan picked up an old t-shirt that was laying beside the bed. After he had cleaned both himself and Radek off he threw it to the floor. Then he snuggled in to Radek's side, laying his head on Radek's shoulder.

"I love you Evan Lorne." Radek whispered.

" I love you too." Evan replied.

Then, as they lay together, they lapsed in to an easy silence. Evan couldn't help giggling
as a thought came to mind.

"What is it Evan?" Radek asked, as he looked at him dreamily.

"I couldn't help thinking we fell for each other in a galaxy far far away but it took a voyage home to let us realise it."

"Well now we know." With that he took Evan in his arms and held him close.

Both men knew that their lives would never be the same.
